Hi well so far I'm having quite good success getting the installation on my Openfire RPC-III system to work using the install CD and I'm up the stage of setting up GRUB before I try rebooting the newly-installed system after getting it set up via a stage-3 tarball.
However when I've run 'grub-install --no-floppy /dev/hda' in the chroot'd environment, the (non-existent!) floppy is still being probed and grub-install has gone into a loop of reporting errors when grub-install tries to talk to to the non-existent floppy device and won't progress to actually putting the boot loader onto the hard disk drive.
The system has a 30 GB Hitachi Endurastar hard drive which is /dev/hda to the system so I specified /dev/hda instead of /dev/sda (which is what's specified in the installation guide).
I'll try to run grub-install again without the '--no-floppy' option and see if that makes any difference. I don't think I've done anything wrong earlier on which would trigger the behaviour which grub-install is exhibiting.

Hi thanks for the tips. I'm going to re-do the install tomorrow night and I'll try it as a live cd install first (since that way it can be done without needing a network connection for downloading stage-3 tarballs), and if that doesn't work properly I'll try it using an install cd instead (which will require an active network connection).
