Folks this is a strange one. After emerging and a revdep-rebuild on 2008, during the startup process it stops with a prompt for e2fsck. The message is "Running e2fsck on a mounted file system may cause damage..." With the yes or no prompt.
I would capture the exact message if I knew how..but it's prior to dmesg/messages.

The first time I saw it I assumed corruption...and booted to a Linux CD and forced a file system check. Both boot and root come up clean with no errors.

during the startup it does the following

mounts / which is /dev/hda3
prompts to run e2fsck
then it update mtab, etc.

What is going on? I searched the forums and google, but nothing?

You have the dump flag turned on. I'm not sure if that's causing the problem.
Quote:
cat /etc/fstab
/dev/hda1 /boot ext2 defaults 1 2
Try this
Code:
cat /etc/fstab
/dev/hda1 /boot ext2 defaults 0 2

Thank you for your response.

Unfortunately the change to 0 2 had no impact on the problem.

It is worth mentioning it looks as if it's mounting things twice (see belos) Perhaps the last time I ran etc-update I applied a newer config file or merged something by accident??? Shouldn't it be checking the disk before clearing /tmp???

Any suggestions on what to do would be appreciated.

Here's a snippet from the startup:

It is certainly possible that it's as simple as configuring your /etc/conf.d/hwclock correctly and deleting /etc/conf.d/clock. :)

Did you muck with your boot scripts such that the disks are mounted r/w off the bat? They normally are mounted read only on boot, and then remounted read/write after fscks are done.

Thank you for your response.

I did not mess with boot services at all, but along the way I might have upgraded baselayout due to a cups error message during boot. I can't remember.

It appears I have conflicting services starting during boot (per the rc-update show listed in the first post). I had (checkfs & checkroot) along with fsck starting on boot. I don't think this is normal? I removed fsck from /etc/init.d/ and now the system will boot up without stopping, but it does complain about fsck being missing. I'm starting to get some other strange messages that I can't figure out either, so I'm probably just going to do a fresh fresh reload of 2008.

I appreciate everyone looking and taking the time to respond.

fsck should be in the boot runlevel.

These are not present on mine

checkfs | boot
checkroot | boot
clock | boot
udev-postmount | default

You will also probably want dbus and hald in default.

The problem was between the keyboard and the chair. I had merged Baselayout 2 and didn't follow the instructions very well. After following these excellent instructions, it boots with no issues:

http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/openrc-migration.xml

Read these instructions, and before you reboot, read them again and check your work.

Thanks to all of you who offered assistance.
