Hi Guys,
This question is regarding Vmware-Server.
I took the proper steps to install Vmware-Server on a Gentoo image I installed a few days ago according to the Gentoo Handbook.
And installed Vmware-Server according to instructions in the gentoo-wiki.com site (which is down so I went and looked for it in the wayback machine: http://web.archive.org/web/20080214194510/gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_Install_VMWare_Server
I want to control it through a Windows box so I downloaded Vmware console for windows.
I made sure that the Vmware modules are installed with no problem, Installed them and got no error: emerge --oneshot vmware-modules
After I run the configuration file I get this output:
* Starting VMware services: [ ok ]
* Virtual machine monitor [ !! ]
* Virtual ethernet [ ok ]
* Bridged networking on /dev/vmnet0 [ ok ]
* Host-only networking on /dev/vmnet1 (background) [ ok ]
* Host-only networking on /dev/vmnet8 (background) [ ok ]
* NAT service on /dev/vmnet8 [ ok ]
I edited /etc/xinetd.d/vmware-authd and made sure I have access from my window's host IP subnet and I also
confirmed it by telneting to port 902 and all is good (also made sure the "only_from" field is correctly configured to indicate my network and mask)
I added root to the Vmware group as well -> gpasswd -a root vmware
After running the configuration script everything seems to be fine, but restarting Vmware through /etc/init.d/vmware stop
and /etc/init.d/vmware restart gave the following message:
* VMware Server is installed, but it has not been (correctly) configured
* for the running kernel.
* Please ensure that the modules have been compiled for this kernel:
* emerge --oneshot vmware-modules
* Also ensure VMware Server has been configured:
* /opt/vmware/server/bin/vmware-config.pl
* VMware is not properly configured! See above.
I managed to solve it through here http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=636516
do you think it is good practice to do so?
anyway, I try to connect to to my Gentoo host and the Vmware console just hangs in there and nothing happens.
Anyone can help please? - spent so much time on it but couldn't figure out why I don't get connected.
Thanks,
Elad |

are there some useful error messages in /var/log/messages when you are trying to connect? |
