|

Hi, all...
It's been a miserable day as I watched Portage and yesterday's "e2fsprogs, com_err, and ss blockers" take me down the path to totally messed up libraries and an unbootable system.
Now, my issue is compounded, by the inability of my "gentoo 2008 livecd" to find my network device. During boot of my Thinkpad X60s I see the error: Code: | No Network device auto detected... |
I have no hope of rescuing this system without networking!
It must be just a software issue, because everything worked perfectly 24 hrs ago, just before the "portage bomb"...
Would someone please help me work through this??? Networking is definitely not my forte!
Thanks! _________________ "Primum non nocere" ---Galen

try:
Code: |
modprobe e1000
ifconfig eth0 up
|
X60s should have this Chipset: Intel PRO/1000 MT Mobile Ethernet
could you give us the output of var/log/messages after these commands? |

Thanks for your quick response...
Since I have no network connectivity with the laptop, I can't get an exact copy of /var/log/messages, but this is what I get on screen: Code: |
Oct 29 20:44:38 livecd acpid: client connected from 27049[0:0]
Oct 29 20:44:38 livecd acpid : 1 client rule loaded
Oct 29 20:53:01 livecd sudo: gentoo : TTY=pts/0 ; PWD=/home/gentoo ; USER=root ; COMMAND=/sbin/modprobe e1000
Oct 29 20:53:26 livecd sudo: gentoo : TTY=pts/0 ; PWD=/home/gentoo ; USER=root ; COMMAND=/sbin/ifconfig/ eth0 up
Oct 29 20:54:09 livecd sudo: gentoo : TTY=pts/0 ; PWD=/home/gentoo ; USER=root ; COMMAND=/bin/cat /var/log/messages |
Does this tell us anything?
Thanks, again! _________________ "Primum non nocere" ---Galen |

Actually, running lshw identifies my ethernet controller to be an Intel 82573L Gigabit Ethernet Controller...
What module should that require?
Thanks! _________________ "Primum non nocere" ---Galen |

If the Gentoo CD doesn't connect to the network properly, then I would suggest trying a different CD.
