How can I get GNOME to automount my CD Drive when a disc is inserted (and put an icon on the desktop)? It can automount my USB external hard drives.
(I am running on a x86_64 machine)

You need to comment out or remove the cdrom (/dev/cdrom) entries from /etc/fstab. This allows hal to take control of the device, or at least that was how it was explained to me. Also, you should try searching a little more as I have answered this question elsewhere in these forums. |

Apart from commenting out fstab you either need to emerge gnome-volume-manager _with_ USE="automount" or go to System Tools - Configuration Editor - Apps - Nautilus and check the "media_automount" box.
If you go for gnome-volume-manager you can enable automounting in System - Preferences - removable drives and media. _________________ Kali Ma
