I inherited a gentoo Samba server at my new job.
The people who set up the system are long gone, and no one here seems to know anything about linux.
I am attempting to add new users but am having a strange issue.
I add the new user and add them to the main user group "staff" and give them samba passwords. I create user folders for the new users, using "chmod 775" and "chown" to grant ownership of the folder to the user.
There is a shared folder called "public" that they can then access and store/share files.
But here's the thing .....
There is also a "homes" directory that previous users have private folders on (folders that only they can access) and, although I have set up folders for the new users in the "homes" directory as well, I cannot seem to get them to access "private" folders like the previous users do.
There must be something I am missing along the way....but what?
I create folders (mkdir /homes/user)
create the user (useradd -a staff -p password -d /homes/user username)
give the user a samba password (smbpasswd -a username)
give folder ownership (chmod 775 /homes/user)(chown /homes/user username)
.. so, the user can access the public folder, but not their own private one?
What is this poor newbie doing wrong? |

Never mind ....
I was attempting to map the share on the windows machine using \\Server\homes\username instead of \\Server\username
Sheeesh....I feel stupid for even posting.... |
