Greetings:

For the past week I've been trying to fix the following issue on my fresh install of Gentoo 2008.0. The X server takes anytime (it varies) from 1 minute to 10 to start. The issue is the same for XDM, KDM, startx and KDE environments/managers. I reached the conclusion that the problem lies either on my kernel configuration or in the "x11-drivers/xf86-video-intel" (v2.1.1) driver itself, since the problem disappears when I change my xorg.conf file from "intel" driver to "vesa".

I have searched the forum and attempted to apply some of the fixes suggested, as well as used the now unavailable Intel_GMA howto from gentoo-wiki.com and wasn't successful into improving this delay.

I took the liberty to compile all the information of my system in the pastebin central for ease of access.

Installed Packages:

Kernel Configuration:

Xorg Configuration File:

dmesg output:

xorg log:

emerge --info output:
http://pastebin.com/m79230a06

make.conf:

lspci -v output:
http://pastebin.com/m571a860b

net + hostname + hosts config files:

Please let me know if you guys have any suggestions that could let me fix this thing.

PS> I thought it could be a hardware issue and decided to boot the laptop with Knoppix 5.3.1 LiveDVD and the problem wasn't there, so I definitely did something wrong with my gentoo installation.

Make autoconfigured( ==bad :) ) kernel with genkernel. Maybe it will be Ok then. Then look autoconfiguration and compare with yours.

so... you recommend me to delete the .config on /usr/src/linux and use genkernel to re-generate another automated configuration file?

Just buid one more kernel with genkernel. You can have as many kernels as you want in grub menu.lst file.
That one will be with all important and unimportant components for sure. Slower but problem-prof.

Have you tried an Xorg config file?
as root:
cd
/etc/init.d/xdm stop
X -configure
X -config /root/xorg.conf.new

What happens?

GODhack & notHerbert:

Thank you both for your suggestions. I the X configuration was not the problem, however the re-used kernel config file (from the livecd) was (that's what I get for being so lazy).

Anyways, I re-compiled the kernel with genkernel (after deleting all the configuration files, to generate a clean one from scratch). And Eureka! problem solved...

Here's the fixed genkernel configuration (in case someone else suffers the same).

And again... Thanks...
