|
|
Hi thought i would give the old Gentoo Wirless a try for once.
I seem to be having problems with my Belkin Wirless USB Stick.
I am using the 2008 minimal cd to install gentoo onto a old laptop.
I pretty sure gentoo has picked up the wifi stick as i seem to now have eth0 and eth1 and my usb stick is flashing for signal.
I want to get it connected to my router so i get a working IP address because atm i seem to be getting.
196.254.39.41
I have no idea about Gentoo wirless at all and im really not very good with wirless in General.
Could someone help me at all ?
I have logged into my router to check out some settings.
My wifi is using the SSID - The Penthouse
The Channel is set to - Auto
And the type of encrption im using is - WPA-PSK [TKIP]
How would i go about getting my card connected to the network properly.
Thanks |

gentoo_newguy,
The Gentoo Handbook has a section for you.
Choose the handbook for your arch, as its possible there are arch dependent differences. _________________ Regards,

Hey have been using that to work with it.
I set the SSID and that but when it ask me about the encryption type i type my key in and i just get that funny ip address.
Im usless at wirless it is one of the things in gentoo i have never been able to do.
I also tried to use the stick on fedora machine and it picked the usb stick up fine i just coudlnt get it to connect to my router.
Could u also tell me which one of these i should be using ???
Code: |
(This sets a hex WEP key)
# iwconfig eth0 key 1234123412341234abcd
(This sets an ASCII key - prefix it with "s:")
# iwconfig eth0 key s:some-password
|
What is an ASCII key ? or is that a really dumb question |

gentoo_newguy,
That is for wEP encription, not Quote: | encrption im using is - WPA-PSK [TKIP] |
You need net-wireless/wpa_supplicant for WPA-PSL and it has its own set up _________________ Regards,

gentoo_newguy,
It depends on what you mean by 'type'.
You can associate different keys with different ESSIDs and the starup sequence will try tham in the order you want. Thats within WEP of wireless supplicant. I don't know how you try WEP if wireless-supplicant fails. That not to say you can't do it. _________________ Regards,

Hi man thanks for everyting cause i have never had a reply on the wirless.
I could not get Gentoo to work with the belkin stick at the begging of the install so i did the install thru ethernet on my laptop.
I now have a working Gentoo system on my laptop but i still need to get the wireless working.
Gentoo picked up my USB stick with the minimal cd at the begging.
Now Gentoo is installed i dont think the wireless stick is even compiled into my kernel.
I need to get this working and try using the advice you gave me yesterday again.
I have made another post about my wireless stick and asking if anyone could help me compile it into my kernel as i have been through the kernel and i cant see what im looking for.
Hopefully if i can get it to pick it up i can try getting myself connected to my router again.
What i ment by my last post was for instances if i do get it connected to my home router which uses the wpa encryption and everything does work and then i go to the bar that i work in and what to use the wifi there which uses WEP encryption would i neeed to go through a whole new process setting up the wifi.
This is really getting to me as i think wifi is one of the things i have struggled with most on Gentoo and its one of the things which i need to use most.
Sorry if im a pain but im finding it actually quite hard to understand. |

gentoo_newguy,
Lets start at the beginning then.
Show me your Code: | /proc/bus/usb/devices | file when your USB wireless stick is plugged in.
Also post your output.
From that I can determine the chip set in your USB stick and if there is a kernel driver for you.
Wireless drivers are under heavy development in the kernel just now. _________________ Regards,
