Ok, I've installed gentoo on alpha before from stage 1 and never gotten this message.
wc: write error: Broken pipe
This is my CFLAGS
CFLAGS="-mcpu=ev5 -O3 -pipe "
and I got the same message with -mcpu=ev56 as well. Right now I'm downloading the stage2 for ev5. Any other suggestions? |

do you get the message with the stages in http://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/distributions/gentoo/experimental/alpha/ ?
if you do please file a bug.

i've got exactly the same problem with my Digital Alpha 433a
i'm using the stage1 from
http://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/distributions/gentoo/releases/1.4_rc1/alpha/
and after starting bootstrap this message runs through the display:
wc: write error : Broken pipe
any suggestions?

Same suggestion, that stage is very outdated. use the ones in the experimental/alpha/ directory on the mirrors.
