|
|
Everytime I do a lengthy package emerge (like OpenOffice or kdelibs), the machine will cut off after about an hour. I'm thinking it is a over-heating issue. The problem is, it is a laptop. The only cooling it's got is what it is provided with. The fans are fairly quiet, so I doubt it's a bad fan. I tried cutting the heat off in the house (dropped nearly to 59 F in the house), and it still cut itself off.
Any suggestions? _________________ "It's ok, they might have guns but we have flowers." - Perpetual Victim |

things to help cooling a laptop:
raise the bottom off the desk a little, i have a small block that holds the rear end off the table slightly to allow more air flow to hit the fan. you might want to try disassembling the laptop and checking the heatsinks for hair and dust and whatnot. i cleaned mine in what was probably the first time ever, and the temps dropped a fair bit (along with raising the back end up)

agreed. Most laptops allow relatively easy access to the heatsinks--if the laptop is more than a few months old I think you'll be amazed how much dust and crap will accumulate there. It can make a huge difference in temperatures. _________________ “Isn’t it enough to see that a garden is beautiful without having to believe that there are fairies at the bottom of it too?”

Blew some dust out of it and it seemed to help a little, but my GPU easily hits 230+ degrees F in no time flat. Any other suggestions? _________________ "It's ok, they might have guns but we have flowers." - Perpetual Victim |

If it's under warranty, get it repaired. |

Way out of warranty.
So long as I don't do any hardware rendering, it's fine. _________________ "It's ok, they might have guns but we have flowers." - Perpetual Victim |

Well, you'll just have to risk opening it up and refitting the heatsinks. |

if you have difficulty in opening the laptop
you can try these followings.
set the power save and speed to battery optimised
it may take longer to emerge the same package. but saves the restart of emerge from begining every shutdown.
also you can try to elevate the laptop on four supports to about 3 inches from table top and use a icecold gel pad under. [the plastic gel pack flat used to heat /cool body pains. can be put in fridge] and wipe off the moisture .
it will help pushing cold air to the fan inlet.
i use toshiba-tecra-9000 5 years old. i have not cleaned it yet. for reaching the pcb is hard mechanically.
my cpu temp reaches 90C and automatically go down to 70 C and varies between these states.by auto adjusting the cpu speed. it has never shutdown thermally.
it takes long times for emerging .eg. kdelibs-3.5.10 took 3 hours 48 minutes.
then if you blank the lcd [in my case it is Fn + F5F5] the video will be diverted to tv out. ithink.
the backlight switched off saves the power as well.
i have noticed when it does not have to show a desktop the cpu load is much less.
if it is possible to open and clean the cpu heatsink is the best solution.
but in 5 months it cant collect that much of dirt to shutdown the system thermally. if you use it inside home or office.
5 yr old laptop i use is example for that fact. sure it will have so much dirt hair and what not collected.
the fan speed variations are noticeable while emerging a package.
and do all emerges in console stopping the xdm. and dont play any music/video. keep the top open.
all the above if done it will help.
i hope so. _________________ reach out a little bit more to catch it (DON'T BELIEVE the advocate part under my user name) |
