Hi,

I've been trying Amarok 2 beta lately, but it doesn't work.
Quite outstanding issue : I don't have any error message to help me with.

Installation and everything seems to be flawless, but when I try to play something it's stuck.
The progression bar doesn't move forward, nothing happens.

The sound works since I can hear YouTube (Flash/Firefox), MadPlay and any other sound stuff...

I know it's only a beta, but does someone have an idea ?

Thank a lot,
Maxime

Hi,

Yes, HAL is started.

But I think the problem comes from KDE4, I don't believe the sound is set up. The problem is, I can't see the sound configuration program in the kde4 configuration panel.

Anybody has an idea for this one ?

Thanks,
Maxime

Hi,

I try and launch Amarok with the console, and have this error message :

Code:

amarok:    Phonon currentState:  5
amarok:    Phonon oldState:  0
amarok:    Error, can not play this track.
amarok:    Failure count:  2

And basically got it everytime I try to play something in Amarok.

My other sound software works. I don't get it.

Fix found : one has to install phonon-xine, as Amarok requires it.

Amarok's default sound system is Xine, and phonon is KDE4's. So we need the interface to get the first working !

Code:
emerge phonon-xine

(if you are happy with your USE variables)

Thanks for the tip. I hate how KDE 4 decided to have all its own packages instead of building on and using existing packages (open source competition with Vista? Bleagh). But maybe I'll try Amarok 2 again with this advice. It's a neat program, even though I won't be using KDE 4 for quite a while.

Hi,

I must admit that KDE 4, Amarok and so on ... are interesting because they seem to try something different. KDE 4 isn't another version of KDE 3.5 with more features, it works quite differently.

I'm not saying it's good, but at least they're trying something. I've installed them merely to test them, but they are far from being really usuable. They actually miss some functionalities you took for granted in the KDE 3.5 generation of software.

Perhaps they should keep both branchs/philosophies of KDE's. I wouldn't spit on some more choice ;) (Yes, I know it's already hard to maintain one, so 2 would be a huge work)

Wait and see.

Maxime

PS : I don't believe we can blame KDE4 and even less Amarok 2-beta. I think they're still in their early days and in a need of further development. They need our support.

Thanks for the info, was wondering why it wouldn't play. Why isn't this a dependancy?

Hi,

In my opinion, since KDE4 is still in its early days and amarok 2 is still in beta, the dependencies are not robust at the moment.

But it's merely a wild guess here :p
