Help!

I accidentally unmerged glibc from my main computer!
(As far as I understand it, glibc is the gatekeeper for C, so a lot of necesary system tools like cd, cp, mv are not working. The machine also can't boot of course)

I can boot from a LiveCD, chrooting is not functioning, However I can mount proc etc. and I have a quickpkg from glibc from a similar other computer. However I don't really have a clue were to place it and what I have to look for too (symlinks? where? whereto?)

If, only if, the package you have is compatible and of an at least equivalent version, simply unpack it at the root of the installed system once you have mounted any necessary partitions. Having done that, reboot or use chroot use then run emerge -K sys-libs/glibc, or preferably specify which version. At that point you could rebuild it locally if desired.

If the above doesn't help, and IIRC, some kind forum member have finished binaries (for x86?) for some important system stuff(gcc, glibc, etc), in case something like this would happen.
I don't remeber what thread I read this in however, so I can't provide much more information, sry.

Hence the link to http://tinderbox.dev.gentoo.org/default-linux/, the more common variations are available there.

Yeah this helped. Writing this post from the machine.

I unpacked the package in the root directory (there were 4 folder with files). Then I could chroot into the Gentoo enviroment, emerged glibc, updated the dependencies and it could boot again. thx 4 ur help.

btw: the Ubunte LiveCD is REALLY great!
