Hi,

I've got a Lenovo ThinkPad T400, and it's got a faulty ATI chipset (I know because I have the exact same issue in Vista, XP, and Gentoo). The defect causes X (or the Windows GUI, in the case of XP/Vista) to freeze up a few minutes after I log in. I cannot use the mouse or keyboard, including doing Ctrl-Alt-Backspace to restart X; I have to do a hard reboot. I would like to diagnose the cause of this issue to be absolutely sure before I RMA it. Where can I find the relevant logs?

Thanks!

If you're having a hardware-based hard freeze, I seriously dobut there are going to be any logs of the trouble. If there are, they would be most likely be inconclusive, or corrupted.

Why worry about the diagnosing the problem anyway? It freezes. That could be memory, CPU, motherboard, or video. If you're RMAing it, it's not your job to know what's wrong. That's what the hardware tech is supposed to do. "Freezes" will suffice as a symptom.

Blessed be!
