From what I've read on-line I should just be able to run wvdialconf, then wvdial, but it doesn't work.

cat /etc/wvdial.conf

[Dialer Defaults]
Init2 = ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0
Modem Type = Analog Modem
Phone = +4475XXXXXXXX
ISDN = 0
Username = user
Init1 = ATZ
Password = pass
Modem = /dev/ttyUSB0
Baud = 9600

Firstly the baud rate looks rather low to me, anyway.......

-> WvDial: Internet dialer version 1.60
--> Initializing modem.
--> Sending: ATZ
ATZ
OK
--> Sending: ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0
ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0
OK
--> Modem initialized.
--> Sending: ATDT+447588126849
--> Waiting for carrier.
ATDT+447588126849
NO CARRIER
--> No Carrier! Trying again.
--> Sending: ATDT+447588126849
--> Waiting for carrier.
ATDT+447588126849
NO CARRIER
--> No Carrier! Trying again.
--> Sending: ATDT+447588126849
--> Waiting for carrier.
ATDT+447588126849
NO CARRIER
--> No Carrier! Trying again.
--> Sending: ATDT+447588126849
--> Waiting for carrier.

Has anyone out there managed to get this working? I know it's possible as I have a work colleague who has it working pretty much plug and play on ubuntu.

I don't think the config file is right but I don't know what settings should be used.

Are you sure that's the number you need to be dialling?
Most GPRS modems use *99# or *99***[1-9]# as the number.

If your 3G modem stick has a memory card slot you may need to run this tool to get it to switch from "flash memory stick" to "modem stick" mode:

Code:
sys-apps/usb_modeswitch [ Masked ]
      Latest version available: 0.9.4
      Latest version installed: [ Not Installed ]
      Size of files: 21 kB
      Homepage:      http://www.draisberghof.de/usb_modeswitch/
      Description:   USB_ModeSwitch is a tool for controlling 'flip flop' (multiple devices) USB gear like UMTS sticks.
      License:       GPL-2

i'm thinking of getting a 3G USB modem stick, so have been looking into how to get them to work and found this tool suggested more and more times.

Rich.
