Hey guys... For some reason I cannot get sound to work on my computer.
I have a macbook with intel 82801H HD Audio controller

I compiled my kernel with the appropriate settings selected (as the gentoo ALSA guide states)
and I still have no sound.

I tried running alsaconf ( the correct sound card appeared) and still no sound.

One interesting thing is that where I connect my headphone jack to the computer, there is a red light turned on. When i boot from
my mac partition that does not happen.

Another interesting fact is that when i pop up alsamixer, I cannot mute "PCM", that is, there is no option to mute or unmute. WHile testing
I did make sure everything was unmuted. And in addition, there is no "Master" bar on the display.

Thanks in advance

A couple things to check would be your OSS configuration in your kernel (make sure it's off), and your the mixer for whichever desktop environment you're using. For instance, in Kmix there are switches that usually have to be enabled or disabled for your sound to work. If I remember correctly, alsamixer doesn't have an option to mute PCM at all.

Please post the output of the following commands:

Code:

$ lspci |grep -i audio
$ lsmod |grep hda_intel
$ cat /proc/asound/cards
$ cat /proc/asound/Intel/codec#0

what's your kernel/alsa version? I have the same card, still no luck in generating sound out of it, I've heard that you need at least alsa version 1.0.17/kernel 2.6.27

I have had this problem a couple of times. Most recently the thing that fixed it was actually disabling ALSA in the kernel and just emergeing the ALSA driver. Also, you might have to recompile anything that was added after ALSA was added with --newuse. if added to your USE flags. It seemed that the newer kernel was screwy with ALSA.

I believe you need to add the option "model=mbp3" to the snd-hda-intel module. Hope that helps!

I believe you need to add the option "model=mbp3" to the snd-hda-intel module. Hope that helps!

Either this or "model=macpro" - see /usr/src/linux/Documentation/sound/alsa/ALSA-Configuration.txt for more details ...

nope, in my case you are wrong,
Code:
agg@NCC-5001-D ~ $ cat /proc/asound/cards
 0 [Intel          ]: HDA-Intel - HDA Intel
HDA Intel at 0xf6ffc000 irq 21
 1 [HDMI           ]: HDA-Intel - HDA ATI HDMI
HDA ATI HDMI at 0xf6dec000 irq 17
dagg@NCC-5001-D ~ $ cat /proc/asound/card0/codec#0 | grep dec
Codec: IDT 92HD73C1X5
dagg@NCC-5001-D ~ $ cat /proc/asound/card1/codec#0 | grep dec
Codec: ATI ATI R6xx HDMI

the file reads:
Quote:

STAC92HD73*
ref Reference board
dell-m6 Dell desktops

Code:
cat /etc/modprobe.d/alsa
# Alsa kernel modules' configuration file.

# ALSA portion
alias char-major-116 snd
# OSS/Free portion
alias char-major-14 soundcore

##
## IMPORTANT:
## You need to customise this section for your specific sound card(s)
## and then run `update-modules' command.
## Read alsa-driver's INSTALL file in /usr/share/doc for more info.
##
##  ALSA portion
alias snd-card-0 snd-hda-intel
## alias snd-card-1 snd-ens1371
##  OSS/Free portion
alias sound-slot-0 snd-card-0
## alias sound-slot-1 snd-card-1
##

# OSS/Free portion - card #1
alias sound-service-0-0 snd-mixer-oss
alias sound-service-0-1 snd-seq-oss
alias sound-service-0-3 snd-pcm-oss
alias sound-service-0-8 snd-seq-oss
alias sound-service-0-12 snd-pcm-oss
##  OSS/Free portion - card #2
## alias sound-service-1-0 snd-mixer-oss
## alias sound-service-1-3 snd-pcm-oss
## alias sound-service-1-12 snd-pcm-oss

alias /dev/mixer snd-mixer-oss
alias /dev/dsp snd-pcm-oss
alias /dev/midi snd-seq-oss

options snd-hda-intel model=dell-m6
options snd-hda-intel index=0

# Set this to the correct number of cards.
options snd cards_limit=1

dagg@NCC-5001-D ~ $ cat /etc/modules.d/alsa
# --- BEGIN: Generated by ALSACONF, do not edit. ---
# --- ALSACONF version 1.0.18 ---
alias snd-card-0 snd-hda-intel
alias sound-slot-0 snd-hda-intel
# --- END: Generated by ALSACONF, do not edit. ---

and that is a dell laptop...
btw, this guy was able to make it work with debian and alsa 1.0.17 but I dont seem to be able to find out exactly what he did...
