Was forced to install ubuntu on a new computer about a year ago.....after being a gentoo user for a number of years...it was hell. 
Installed gentoo again today....
soooo much better,
I have a minimal install as previously no kde, no gnome just
xorg, xdm, icewm and other apps i use
no clutter, no fuss, things just work straight away.
I've done many installs before but I found the install easy and documentation good....all went smoothly.
Like being in heaven!!!

i shouldn't be too hard on ubuntu -- its just that Gentoo does what i want and very well! |

very true. I just got really pissed at gentoo about 30 seconds ago (why is revdep-rebuilt not a part of the baselayout/portage if ebuilds ask you to run it so much?) but I know even if I go and change distros and reinstall linux, for some damn reason I will be back using gentoo.... probably complaining the whole way....
funny, I never complained when I used slackware, yet I always come back to gentoo.

That sounds like mine, except I use openbox or dwm in place of icewm and I don't use xdm.

Slackware is kind of fun but I have gotten rather used to all the nice tools Gentoo provides (and the brilliant configuration files under /etc/portage).  |

Jeeze... I end up playing with emerge until I have thousands of packages installed, all on ~x86 and with svn/cvs repositories and I end up demolishing myself.. (usually takes about 2 years before it falls apart)...
However, i do LOVE gentoo --- everything is there, everything is so simple, Gentoo FTW

have only been using gentoo a short time but i must say i love it too - once you get your head around a few things its not bad to use, even a stage3 install is easy (after the 10th time!!  ) |

I do love gentoo, BUT, I shall be keeping Ubuntu on my mother's laptop
for you see she is 65 years old, and this is a laptop I gave her.
Gentoo will be on every desktop/laptop I intend to use for myself.
But when giving a laptop to my 65 year old mother, had to opt for Ubuntu. I need her to be able to use it without calling me all the damn time to fix something
Apples and oranges. Hopefully nobody thinks I'm flaming gentoo - if you see my other posts, far from it. Again, remember, 65 year old grandma with no tech savvy whatsoever "now mom, your linking consistency is off, I need you to...ok, go to Applications, Accessories, Root Terminal. Ok, now in that black box type 'romeo echo victor, hyphen, romeo echo bravo uniform indigo lima delta', and tell me what it says"
I still feel much safer having her on that, than I would having her using her old Windows 2000 desktop. |

I installed Jaunty Jackalope(jesus those names ) on my one hard drive couple of days ago just for curiosity.
Now it just sits there..unused..Ubuntu is boring! Should do " mount /dev/sda /mnt/ubuntu && cd /mnt/ubuntu && rm -rf *" right away  |

well my nix way (as my basic system) was (after 9 years with windows) ubuntu, debian, archlinux, gentoo, freebsd, gentoo
U see, Gentoo wins. It's not about speed, It's not about march optimalization. It is about freedom. It is about configuration and about building system exactly how I want. And all is very easy. I love it. I love portage, I love use flags, I love ebuilds, I love Linux |

I have here a laptop with Xubuntu on ext4, as I had ext4 with the other desktop and Gentoo installed. They both use 2.6.29 at the moment, except of Gentoo patches and Ubuntu patches of course.
On Gentoo I never ever had problems with the filesystem.
On Xubuntu, sometimes inodes are completely wrong and direct to wrong files after copy. larger files get corrupted during copy. This makes the system freeze often e.g. during empty of the wastebasket and so on and so on...
I just moved and as soon as my new landlord has the wireless router (I begged him to install) in place I'll install Gentoo again... |

Hi,
Since i first installed Gentoo (i think it was 2004/2005) i completely fell in love with it Comming from SuSE it was a great relief hot having YaST (their setup tool) undoing every change i made to config files myself and forcing you to do it the YaST way anyway.
A few months ago on a GNU/Linux meeting i ran a ubuntu Live CD to show it to some new people who wanted to know a few details we couldn't figure out otherwise. I hated it from the moment it booted.
- I could not see boot messages (Silly splash screens to "hide the difficulty")
- It assumed i wanted non-free drivers for wifi, which i don't (and which i don't need with an up-to-date Gentoo)
- It activated compiz
- And after all i found it much more difficult to figure out how to make some settings in their "easy" GUI's than it is with the normal config files
In paranoia mode (in which i usually am ), i could not trust my on-disk gentoo install anymore. Closed software (so that's untrusted code) has ran on kernel level, so technically it could have done anything to my gentoo installation without telling me. In the end i ended up donig an emerge -e world, build a new kernel and reinstalled grub, i guess that's enough
Gentoo will be my distro of choice until it dies (which i expect it'll never do ).
