For the record, the toolchain is the basic programs that need to be there to have a working box.

It's the back bone of your Gentoo installation. You have for exemple Gcc,Glibc, libtool and other stuff.

probably the same as the LFS ones (I forgot which ones they were) . I tried your command for rebuilding the system from A to Z as you say, but it says "ERROR: the above package list contains packages which cannot be installed at the same time on the same system" I've been following the amd64 gentoo book and I'm on chapter 10 now.

the message should continue with something like "package sys-dump/x is blocking package sys-apps/y"
Code:
emerge --unmerge x
is a quick and dirty way to eliminate the block(s) and usually works
Code:
emerge -uNDea system
to restart the toolchain update
Code:
emerge -uNDea world
to update everything
handle any additional blocks the same way

Sorry for the delay - I'm trying to figure out how to long into my newly set up partition - I went quickly through the part about setting up user accounts (left things as default) and cannot find the right combination of user/passord . I'll post the error in time.

..I think its because I didn't run 'passwd' - is this necessary? I don't think so; it should have no password if I don't run it (but I still can't log in with root and a blank password) ..

Well....I don't know what happens if you don't passwd. Generally that's why you go through the handbook step by step - it's quicker.

You keep saying that ... I did go through the entire book - I just decided which steps weren't necessary. From my experience with linux I didn't think passwd was necessary (says so on the man page I think)

I keep saying that because that's how people could avoid posting half the topics in this subforum - and not waste their own time (sometimes even giving up on gentoo).

And you have just proven me right (although saying "I told you so" gives me no pleasure....).

it took me 30 seconds to chroot and run passwd again - and I woudln't have learnt that passwd is required.

Good for you. The fact still is that you decided to skip something and wasted time because of it ;] (and I'm not gonna argue if 30s is a lot of time - it does not matter, what does matter is that people should follow the handbook, period)

OK - I have xorg-x11 xorg-server and xf86-video-intel. I also have the xf86 vesafb driver and the xf86 video ati driver. I did Xorg -configure and it gets stuck on the screen with messy colors [the one right before the one with the little x and the checkered pattern - which is what I'm supposed to be seeing).

I've been following this page:
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/xorg-config.xml

Using auto:
Try eliminating /etc/X11/xorg.conf (rename it, move it, delete it) and then
Code:
startx
allowing the auto script to run.
or
Obtain and boot a sysrescuecd. when it has booted enter
Code:
wizard
in the wizard select
Quote:
Generate a default config for Xorg in /etc/X11/xorg.conf
after it runs
Code:
startx

If that works, assuming your root is on /dev/sda3:
Code:
mkdir /gentoo
mount /dev/sda3 /gentoo
cp /etc/X11/xorg.conf /gentoo/etc/X11/xorg.conf

should give a working xorg.conf on your system that you can play with or just use.
Reboot your installed system and try startx.

Its telling me that it canno't find xorg.conf.new in root as an error, and Xorg -configure fails.

This sounds like you. Two video cards, intel for battery use, radeon for use when plugged in.

The W500 I received has the “switchable graphics.” What this really means is that is contains two video chipsets and you can swtich back and forth between them.

That even more sounds like you should eliminate /etc/X11/xorg.conf and allow the invisible automatic configuration script to run.

I still like the idea of using sysresccd to see if it will give X.

Does the first boot screen tell you which video card is up?
