isight and kernel 2.6.27

Hi,

I still don't really know how work the firmware loading with new linux kernel.

So, there is my problem : I would to use my isight cam on my kernel. And even if I extracted the Apple driver in /lib/firmware/isight.fw and put the "good" options in the kernel I still don't have any /dev/video0.

So, here is my kernel config (32bit) :

just noticing that you do not have a device /dev/video0 only tells you, "it does not work".
examine the output of dmesg, that should give you messages that tell you WHY it does not work.

There are all kinds of stuff about it on the net. Google is your friend. Support has supposedly existed since 2.6.24, if I read right.

Also, I suggest that you take a look at one of my kernel seeds. The .config you have is way overloaded with bad things, not the least of which is fair CPU scheduling. You need to trim things considerably. Click on the link in my sig, and try one of my seeds.

Ok Thank you for the kernel config.

About google and isight stuff. Except if I'm very bad, most of stuff says "isight support is now in the kernel. If you use a kernel =<2.6.22 do these instructions...". There is no instructions to enable this support. Maybe because it's supposed to be simple, but I can't figured how to make it work.

I'll clean my kernel config then I'll try again with the isight.

It might take a little looking. There are lots of sites on the web dedicated to running Linux on intel-based Macs. There has to be someone among that crowd that has written a how-to for the isight. Considering how many machines have it, it would be a great disservice not to have such a thing available.

Ok,

So, I cleaned my kernel config, activated isight_firmware and uvcvideo modules in the kernel and v4l support too.
I still have my isight.fw in the /lib/firmware directory. Extracted with the last version of isight-firmware-tools (1.2).

And still no /dev/video ! Even if I unload uvcvideo and isight_firmware then reload it, isight_firmware in first.

Then, I chose to do the old way : install the module uvcvideo via portage, so I emerged linux-uvc. Create the rules udev for isight, load uvcvideo : that's work.

I am at the 3th google page about isight in the kernel linux and nothing about the activation in the kernel. I keep going...

Try compiling support directly into the kernel. I just noticed the support for the device under USB as I was setting up a seed. I looked at your .config, and the only thing I can surmise is that the isight driver wants to be compiled into the kernel.

Post the results of lspci -n and cat /proc/cpuinfo, as well as your /etc/fstab file, and I'll whip you up a kernel from one of my seeds, and see if we can't get this thing going for you.

I have this problem too and worked for a while finding a solution but could not, so here's a few things:

The isight firmware loading module in the kernel generates dmesg output saying the firmware is loaded, but no device is created. This on 2.6.27 kernel. No idea why it doesn't work. Google shows a lot of Ubuntu stuff saying ubuntu has HALD load the firmware, but I've never gotten gentoo's HALD to load the firmware.

So I did it old-school: do not enable the kernel module isight-firmware loading module; emerge an older version of isight-firmware-tools that supports the command ift-load, and use that command in your udev rules. That works. I am using the v4l driver in the kernel which works well.

I'm away from my macbook (I think version 2,1) now but I hope that helps.
