Is there a way to stop showing text scrolling at boot?

Is there a way to stop showing text scrolling down the screen at boot? I'm not talking about a boot splash.... but a simple way to just keep it from outputting anything?

you may be able to make it quiet till it starts openrc by adding quiet to kernel line in menu.lst
then you will see only kernel version and openrc starting.
we can try to show the boot splash till it gets to login screen.
but i have not been successful
