Hi...I hope I'm not the only one with this problem. I am unable to play any dvd's anymore. There are dvd's in my collection that I could play a few month's back...but now I always get the same error message...and I've tried with 4 dvd players. They all say, more or less, that they cannot open the MRL DVD. VLC, for instance, says that it can't open the MRL at /dev/sr0 (which is the correct device for my drive) when I try to play a dvd. Nothing shows up in any of my log files about a problem. I've got every dvd related package I've always had when this worked. I have tried to play about 7 movies (three of which worked last time I tried, about 9 months ago). Any ideas? Here the emerge info:

I just upgraded VLC and some of its dependencies and am now having trouble as well. I can actually play a few clips (like the copyright notice), and the first few frames of the menu, but then the video freezes. There is no audio, but VLC plays plain audio files (MP3, OGG) just fine.

It seems that the clips it plays fine have no audio, and that it's the audio in the problem clips that are causing it to hang. DVDs use AAC for audio (I think), which is provided by faad2 for VLC. faad2 was part of my recent upgrade.

I'll let you know if I find out anything more.

No. It is usually a52 or dts. But both VLC and MPlayer should have no problems with these codecs. I would rather suspect some kind of copy protection.

I can rule out copy protection based on the fact that I have owned these DVDs for several years, and could play them a while back on Gentoo using Xine or Mplayer. Now no media players work. No media program will now open then at all, and they all report the same 'plugin' issue. I could be that my DVD drive has gone on the fritz, but I does fine with CDs, both audio and data.

From what I understand, there are some ways a DVD drive can go on the fritz and still play CDs. So you might want to try putting in another DVD drive and see if that solves it. Maybe borrow one before you buy a new one, or put a WANTED on your local Freecycle.

You're right, thanks.

Except that I'm seeing this problem on every DVD I own now, and none of them had problems before the upgrade. But maybe it is?

Can you give the full output you get when trying to play a DVD with MPlayer from the commandline? Maybe we can find out what it thinks is wrong.

Well, I don't use mplayer fromt he command line much, but it looks like I should have tried that off the bat. It works on the command line when I give it the correct device. I actually tried it on the command line and it worked. The reason it worked is because It looks like UDEV has renamed my /dev/dvd to /dev/dvd7 now. I'm pretty sure that xine depends on the link being named /dev/dvd...I think it's just a matter of finding out why udev decided that dvd7 was the right name to give the DVD drive..since I only have 1 CD/DVD drive on this machine.

OK, I see now...it's the 70-persistent-cd.rules that get dynamically rewritten. It's been seeing my usb drive that I plug in every once in a while, as a cdrom drive, and written several entries, causing the dvd name to keep incrementing.

I completely misunderstood your problem! Too bad I'm having a different problem, but I'm glad it's working for you now.

Thanks...I completely misunderstood my problem too. Hope you have some luck with yours. You may want to check how much audio buffer you have as well...it may be audio related and if you run out of buffers, it will stop your video playback on many players. How to do that, though, I don't remember.
