|
|
Hi everybody!
Two weeks ago, I replaced my notebook's harddrive with a new SATA drive from Toshiba. Copying data went painless, I switched drives, rebooted, and all worked fine. However, yesterday, I heard for the second time the most horrible imaginable screeching noise coming from the disk for approximately half a second. Image pushing a knife on a LP spinning at 5000 rpm, to get an impression of it. Any way I can think of this noise being produced inside a hard drive should physically destroy at least parts of the drive.
Now, I am well aware that such things usually indicate a dying drive. However, all seems fine, if I was deaf, I wouldn't have noticed anything, no read errors in dmesg, no suspicious entries in SMART, and a long SMART self test completed without failure (and I am confident it indeed did test, it took several hours, you could hear the usual noises of a drive at work, and it heated up).
The qestion: has anybody had similar experiences, and if, did the drive fail? I have added my SMART output below. The three errors recorded seem to be transfer problems that happened when the drive was in an external USB case to copy over my data and seem to be harmless.

the drive didn't fail, but I wouldn't be surprised if it did soon.
Make backups often, and cover your ears ![Razz :P](images/smiles/icon_razz.gif) _________________ iVBORw0KGgoAAAANSUhEUgAAA
