can openbox3 do the remember thing - where it remembers which desktop to open programs on ?
Thats the reason i went back to fluxbox - i love the fact you can use alt+leftmouse to resize windows properly unlike flux which only does it from the bott left corner. Openbox also had perrrty pixmap support before flux but that point is not valid anymore
I dont even use the menu's in flux but foudn that its just got more other little features and patches to make it work nicely. And its got bblaunch to make windows load without decorations.
Oh - and the new flux has rounded corners - openbox got anyfing like that ? _________________ "The box said to install Windows 95, NT or better.... so in installed linux" |

Openbox3 is an all new window manager. It has been rewritten from scratch. Lots of people seem to not want to use it because it is low on features, I think you guys really need to give it some time. Last I checked the main developer hates tabs (and rightfully so) so I doubt we will ever see them. _________________ Think about your breathing.

Would be cool if it had tabs. It's a shame the developer "hates" them as you say. |

I'm very new to OpenBox, using it in Gnome instead of using Metacity.
Is there a way to bind keys to external commands?
I've found a section on keybindings in my rc3 file, but all keybindings were related to OpenBox actions and not to external commands. |

Alpha6 has been released!
Edit
And is already in portage!
Edit 2

Yes, there is. From my rc3:
Code: | <keybind key="C-A-Return">
<action name="execute">
<execute>/usr/X11R6/bin/xterm</execute>
</action>
</keybind> |
Thus pressing Ctrl-Alt-Enter opens a new xterm ala evilwm. Modify to suit your needs (it's the same syntax used in the menu file).

Hm, I managed to iconify one of my apps. And that was the last I've seen from it. Not in the menu etc. And obconf3 doesn't work at all
Besides, AMSN acted strangely, maybe its got to do with gkt2 and ob3? Anyway, when something changes, let me (and maybe others) know, me, I'm back on ob2.
XML format is nice and clean, but the documentation is severly lacking at the homepage about ob3 config. _________________ Greetings,

ok. just merged it, and reverted back.
obconf wasn't working. was looking for an icon called openbox.png or something, but it wasn't available.
the new menu format is confusing, and i don't think i'd like to manually rewrite my looong menu. so if somebody can provide a link to a converter, then i can use ob3b1.
and with the new xml'ized menu, doesn't it come with a default menu editor? because what i loved about *box was the easy way of customizing your menu. and come on, xml isn't as easy.
just give me my menu back. |

There is, the X at the top right corner of your message
I am trying Openbox3_beta1, and it's very nice, also even faster then Openbox2!
Found some new cool features, but one thing I don't like is that you always have 4 desktops, and you can't remove them or add new ones.
Also, how to decorate undecorated windows?
Edit: Figured that one out, Alt + right mouse button |

First, note that a window iconified on workspace X can only be un-iconified from workspace X. So to retrieve your window, go back to the workspace where you iconified it and use Alt+Tab to bring it back.

Here is a simple menu written for both openbox and fluxbox. The menu is comprised of a single submenu called "Terminals" with an entry for xterm, and an "Exit" button.
Fluxbox
Code: | [begin] (Fluxbox)
[begin] (terms) {Terminals}
[exec] (Xterm) {/usr/X11R6/bin/xterm}
[end]
[nop]
[exit] (Exit) |
Openbox
Code: | <openbox_menu>
<menu id="terms" label="Terminals">
<item label="Xterm">
<action name="execute">
<execute>/usr/X11R6/bin/xterm</execute>
</action>
</item>
</menu>
<menu id="root-menu" label="Openbox">
<menu id="terms" />
<separator />
<item label="Exit">
<action name="exit" />
</item>
</menu>
</openbox_menu> |
Obviously the fluxbox menu is shorter, but I think you'll agree (especially if you've had some experience writing HTML) that the openbox menu isn't particularly difficult to understand and has a nice, logical format.

Not true, just edit the relevant portion of your rc.xml:
Code: | <desktops>
<number>4</number>
<names>
<name>Workspace 1</name>
<name>Workspace 2</name>
<name>Workspace 3</name>
<name>Workspace 4</name>
</names>
</desktops> |

That's only at startup I guess, but I mean like before, when you could press the middle mouse button, and choose "New Workspace" or "Remove Last". I can't do that now.... not so important, but it's a good feature that has disappeared. |

Openbox-3.0-beta2 has been released! Also, ObConf (which still doesn't work) has been separated out of the Openbox distribution.
