|
|
Frequently I am using some app (usually urxvt or a browser) that I want to briefly split-screen. Now, this functionality isn't provided in most apps by default but a window manager could emulate it by reducing the current (lets say) terminal window's height (or width) in half, and opening another half-sized terminal while keeping them managed in the same window "frame".
Are there any window managers that are capable of doing this? Even programmable ones (FVWM, maybe Awesome)?
The catch is that I know tiling window managers kind of do this by default, but I want it in a floating window manager (hence the two applications in one window frame). |

Besides that, dwm, awesome, wmii, xmonad all feature tiling, either event-based or automagically- have a look at them. FVWM can also be configured to do something like this, i.e. a function based on FvwmReArrange and FvwmEvent.
Edit, there's also `wmtile` (may be in portage, if not, easy to google), which should work under nearly every WM. It basically works, when you only have on monitor, but for me it gives some hassle when using two ore more monitors, so I'd recommand an tiling-wm. |

I think that a tiling wm is the most natural way to do this.
I know no conventional WM that can do this. I have used fvwm for some years and know it to some degree. While I am no specialist I am sure that it can't do this. At most you can emulate this by doing lots of ugly things. Let's call the windows win1 and win2, you can at most style win2 to remove the title, and tile it just to the south of win1. Then you can design a function so whem you move win1, win2 will be moved along with it. I don't know if there's a way to make both move together (probably the server will be grabbed while you move win1, so until you release it win2 will not move).
There's no way to put the two windows INSIDE the same window frame. That would probably create lots of issues. You could, however, swallow both of them into FvwmButtons or something like that. In that case you are probably going to have some problems with the focus. |

If FvwmPartition compiles, then of course you can do this. But it's a non-standard module. Google for it.

I never heard about that module. Thanks for letting us know about it, Thomas |
