hey, i'm in the same route too! after a HDD & VGA upgrade! (WD6400AAKS & HD4850 512MB just in case anyone is interested!)
will finish the X emerge & after that will start digging to get KDE4 installed.
right now, AFAIK, one should install an *updated* version of portage (not marked as stable though), then unmask KDE-stuff.. & emerge. eh?

I would personally wait a day or two until the devs unmask it. I heard there were a few problems with it...

What version of portage do you have? If you have portage-2.2_rc11, then all you need to do is unmask the KDE packages (sorry, I'm not sure where the list is) or wait until the devs fix the last few problems (should be in a day or two).

If your portage version is portage-2.1.4.4, then you'll need to make a file /etc/portage/package.keywords and write "<=sys-apps/portage-2.2" to it. After that, you'll need to unmask and unkeyword all the KDE packages (I hope someone will tell you where you can get the lists)

ok, as promised! posting this message from konqueror 4.1.2 ;)

after a fresh install (due to hardware upgrade) i did install stable xorg-server, running the vesa driver atm, i did the following:
1. upgrade portage to the latest version:
Code:
[ebuild     U ] app-admin/eselect-1.0.11-r1 [1.0.10] USE="-bash-completion -doc-vim-syntax" 150 kB
[ebuild  N    ] app-admin/eselect-news-20080320  6 kB
[ebuild     U ] sys-apps/portage-2.2_rc11 [2.1.4.4] USE="-build -doc -epydoc (-selinux)" LINGUAS="-pl" 734 kB

2. unmask needed packages for kde-base/kdebase-startkde & kde-base/kdm :
package.unmask:
Code:

this will give you the basic KDE setup, from there you can use your imagination for the rest of the packages! hope this helps ;)

PS, kdm for some odd reason doesn't showup, instead i get the pre-historic xdm one! will update later

By the way, the official guide to installing KDE 4.1.2 is out, and the remaining problems seem to be conflicts between KDE 3.5 and 4.1. So if you don't have KDE 3.5, you can give it a shot

did you use the unmask & keywords files from the testing branch? & the same for the sets, did you get it from there?

I've followed the guide to install kde 4.1.2 and everything seemed to install perfectly. I installed it on a clean system. When i "/etc/init.d/xdm start" (after setting xdm to kdm in conf.d), the screen goes black, i get the mouse cursor for about 1 second, and then i exits back to the console.
I had a look at the xorg.log and i can't see any errors in it. Also, if i login as a normal user and run "startx" it works just fine, i get the basic x window system with the 3 greenish windows and the clock.

My suspicion is therefore that it has something to do with kdm, but i'm at a loss about how to figure out what is wrong. Btw, if i set xdm to use xdm it starts up fine. I can also run "startkde" from the basic windows system(3 greenish consoles and the clock) and then kde4 sort of starts. Looks a bit weird though as it's not exactly supposed to be run that way.

Any suggestions on how to get kdm working?

I also had the same problem (i don't remember what version i used, but it was from the kdesvn-overlay)
I looked in the kdm.log and it said something about dbus-machine.
So i did "/etc/init.d/dbus restart" and then "/etc/init.d/xdm restart" and it worked.
But i have really no clue what is going on in gentoo, so i was just lucky :)

What do you have in /etc/conf.d/xdm? Try setting DISPLAYMANAGER="kdm-4.1"
Also, try to start kde from "clean" X with startkde and see if that works.

YES!!! that was it, dbus wasn't started :) KDE 4 is now running smoothly and damn it looks and plays well.

Thanks for all your answers, i really appreciate it.

Hello
I have a problem with KDE4. When I try to run startkde throws the following error:

$DISPLAY is not set or cannot connect to the X server.

But startx and kdm starts well.
What could it be?

Thank

I am having the same issue. I have tried kde and kde-4.1 in /etc/conf.d/xdm.

To be clear, I can get into KDE if I issue startx first, then from inside there run startkde.

I added dbus to the default startup level as well as xdm. I get a login manager when I boot up, I believe it is just xdm, it is definitely not kdm, and when I log in it takes me to an X session but with no windows at all, just the checkerboard background.

Thanks
