|
|
I just bought a (used) APC-SmartUPS. I can communicate with it via the built-in serial-port just fine, but I don't get anything on the second and third port which are on an expansion card (APC-9607) in a SmartSlot.
That card however has four DIP-Switches to configure it, but I have no documentation and no clue how I should set them.
Is anyone using this UPS or has access to one?
I would be very interested in what these four DIP-Switches are for and how they are configured on other UPS's.
I would be very happy if someone couls point me to any documentation about this, or perhaps send me a scan of the relevant parts of his docs.
Any help appreciated. |

At least one, if not both of the ports in the Interface Expander Card are simple signalling only. You should have cables that grok this that came with it, otherwise you can make or buy them easily enough.
The DIP switches set shutdown modes and timing. Basically, with multiple servers attached to one UPS, you have to decide if you want all the servers to order a turn-off before it turns the UPS off, or if you want to set a time-out. There is a good doc in their support site (try this link, but it might be session-encoded), although it fails to mention the actual switch settings required. Otherwise, try calling their support number, or sending them an email....

That was what I was looking for.
Thanks
PS: Do you have any docs on these DIP-Swicthes? |

No, sorry. Are there any markings on them? _________________ This post more meaningful in a scalar context. |

The serial ports are labeled "Basic Monitoring Ports" 1 and 2.
There are four DIP-Switches labled "Config", numbered 1 to 4, with 0 (Off) being down and 1 (on) being up.
After getting the card out of the UPS, I found (printed on the board of the Interface Expander (APC-9607)) the config-docs for the DIP-Switches.
Here they are:
Code: |
+-----------------+---------+
| MODE SWITCH | 1 2 3 4 |
+-----------------+---------+
| CONFIRMED | 0 0 0 - |
| UNTIL LO-BATT | 0 0 1 - |
| 2 MIN TIMER | 0 1 0 - |
| 5 MIN | 0 1 1 - |
| 10 MIN | 1 0 0 - |
| 15 MIN | 1 0 1 - |
| 30 MIN | 1 1 0 - |
| 60 MIN | 1 1 1 - |
+-----------------+---------+
| ADV = NORMAL | - - - 0 |
| ADV = CONFIRMED | - - - 1 |
+-----------------+---------+
|
Does anybody know what they mean? |

Yes. Basically, this box is pretty simple for most of what it has to do. It just forwards TTL-level signals whenever something happens.
However, there is one gnarly situation that it has to deal with. When there is an extended power outage, at some point you want to have the UPS shut off, to save battery power (or not, if you want to run as long as possible). With multiple devices plugged in, some may be able to shut themselves down (running PowerChute, upsd, whatever), some may be able to have power cut without consequence (routers, etc), and others may be brain-damaged, and of low priority, and you don't want them holding everything up.
Each device attached to a signalling port will be given power failure signals, and may or may not evenually send back the "turn off" signal. The interface expander listens for all these, and when everyone has sent one, it turns of the UPS.
These DIP switches tell the interface expander what to do if they don't send the signal:
Confirmed - wait no matter what
Until lo-batt - run as long as possible
x min timer - wait this long, then assume the device is otl
I think the Confirmed Mode also manipulates the signalling so it looks like a regular UPS, so software attached to it doesn't have to know the difference. It pulls a pin low that makes it looks like the UPS is off, that kind of thing. Otherwise, Confirmed and Until lo-batt wouldn't be much different. I may be missing something here, though.
The ADV DIP switch does the same for the advanced signalling on the built-in serial port (on the UPS, not the interface expander). The UPS already has settings for timeouts set through software, so it doesn't need to be set here.
Make sense?
You will probably just want to set them all to Confirmed.
The timer modes are for devices that will be signalled, but may not signal back properly. There aren't a lot of these. Unless you have a server that hangs a lot, especially on shutdown, you probably won't use them... _________________ This post more meaningful in a scalar context. |
