|
|
Hello,
I'm very interested to reply my current celeron energy hog with a CuBox.
It is shipped with Ubuntu so I think it will run as well with Gentoo ... but how hard will it be to install Gentoo on it ?
I need at least :
- standards Network servers as DNS, DHCP, ...
- VLC (the system will be headless but I need it to stream video to my Internet Provider settopbox - FreePlayer)
- Apache 2
- PHP 5.3
- Postgresql
- ...
Thanks

Sweet device, thanks for the link (mostly posting here as a reminder, sorry )
As for "how hard", depends if all kernel-stuff is already in linux or if you'd need custom patches. Apart from that, it shouldn't be to complicated, other (similar) ARM systems (Efika MX, SheevaPlug, ...) are also supported by Gentoo and have their respective guides. Cross-compiling should imho be done, though. _________________ ++++++++++[>+++++++>++++++++++>+++>+<<<<-]>++.>+.+++++++..+++.>++.<<+++++++++++++++.>.+++.------.--------.>+.>. |

userspace is on the SD card, replacing it with Gentoo should be no problem at all.
Thanks for the link, I ordered one. |

But is this hardware strong enough to transcode on the fly AVI (or even MP4) on MP2 ?
I know that ARM arch are a lot stronger than Intel one for the same clock, but my current celeron 1.?? Ghz is not fast enough to convert MKV to MP2. I would like to be sure that at least stock AVI runs.

well, the processor used does have a 1080p-capable h264 decoder. theoretically
at least transcoding shouldn't be necessary at all |

It shouldn't be very difficult to get Gentoo on there. Like avx said, the greatest hurdle will be kernel support for the hardware. (Not Gentoo's fault if it isn't all supported.)
I know PostgreSQL will run on it just fine. It runs happily on my Pentium II 233 MHz with 384MiB server as well as all the other services you mention. (It swaps occasionally until the system gets the right stuff in the RAM.) One gibibyte should be plenty of room. _________________ The best things in life are free.

Are you get it? If do, when?
I made pre-order 14.04.2012, but the lack of news worried me. |

Yes I received it 2 weeks ago. So far I have only plugged it into the TV and
looked around the on-board Ubuntu a bit.
armin76's ARMv7 stages should work with it but I haven't yet set up anything.
Kernel is a separate issue; the one from solidrun is hopelessly outdated and
I haven't yet found the platform patches. |

1.5 month from order - you are lucky. I placed my order in middle of April. |
