So I am in the middle of making a floppy boot system for Gentoo. I've got this kernel too. It's friggin HUGE. My idea was "hey, lets make anything that will be needed a module." Sounds great, right? Well, with 1.3MB of modules bzip'd that doesn't leave much room for the kernel. So is it possible to put all of the modules on a separate disk?
I can put the root filesystem on another floppy, which i have already figured out how to do, but can you put say... an initial ramdisk on another floppy disk? anyone know how this might be done (if possible?) _________________ In the end, the love you get is equal to the love you make

DefconAlpha,
You can make life easier by using a non standard floppy format.
A standard 1440kb floppy will hold 1743kb or even 1840kb with the right formatting..
Certainly 1743kb floppies boot - M$ call them Microsoft Distribution Format.
See man fdformat and its references.
You can put some of the modules on a second floppy. RedHat do it. They have a boot disk with the common modules but for more esoteric hardware, you have to swap floppies to let the kernel load modules.

I don't know if you have access to a zip drive.. but if so, gentoo works very easily on zip disks |

I have no access to zip drives (not off campus anyways) and the target machines that this will be used for more than likely won't have access either. _________________ In the end, the love you get is equal to the love you make

I don't wanna let you have all the fun :)
Besides, i started using a vanilla kernel with just xfs patching instead of the gentoo kernel and now i have plenty of space to fit the kernel and drivers onto it... _________________ In the end, the love you get is equal to the love you make
