Hi, after unpacking your Funtoo tree, did you run git pull to update it ?

I did a "git checkout funtoo.org" and "emerge -uaD --newuse world" afterwards...

Code:
git pull

To update the tree.

In fact, git pull is like a emerge --sync if you use portage 2.2rc20.

And if you use this specify version, then you can run emerge --sync, because with this version and higher, portage knows if you have a git portage or funtoo tree and he run for you all the command that you need to update your tree.

Did you check if newer versions were available?

Yes, a git pull said something like: "already up to date"...

We all know that gentoo has changed over the last years. There are a lot of external ressources like the overlays that we can use to improve the gentoo experience.

So I wondered what of all these tools and tricks out there you are using to get the best experience with gentoo? What overlays do you use for example? Are you using offical portage? What about kernel sources?

Yes, I use official portage and stable for the most part. Added the latest Compiz Fusion from overlay. Also, gentoo-sources kernel. I have however found that pappy's kernel seeds is a very useful way of getting a good configuration for the kernel: http://62.3.120.141/~pappy

No, but with the funtoo-tree from today i even expect it not to downgrade half of my system.
On funtoo.org it reads like the snapshots are from the actual portage tree. My system is ~arch and i really like it to stay that way...
As for missing settings, i just followed the small howto on funtoo.org.

When you have installed your funtoo tree, did you change the variable : PORTDIR ?

I installed my funtoo tree inside my /home, so I don't touch at all my /usr/portage.

after that i did a git checkout funtoo.org && emerge --sync; emerge -uaD world.

You need to tell to portage that your default portage tree is no more /usr/portage but something else.

I switched to OpenRC on my laptop and it decreased boot time considerably. Every second counts with a P3

I just switched to OpenRC on my PIII laptop, too, and it does seem interesting, and perhaps a bit faster.

One thing I might add is try everything you can, since you have so many choices.
