Raw Postscript output using CUPS and HP 7310 - SOLVED

Installed hp-2.8.12 on my Gentoo 2.6.24-gentoo-r7 box for a network attached Officejet 7310 . Took package directly from HPLIP website as the current package available via Gentoo doesn't appear to support network device discovery.

Printing works via printing test page in CUPS webpage but the output appears to be raw postscript:

"%!PS-Adobe-3.0 %%Bounding box... "

and is printed as text on the printer.

Occurs when printing CUPS text page and from Open Office 3.0.

Got it to work

* The hplip in the portage (2.8.6b) does not discover network attached printers but the one on the HP site does. I downloaded and installed this version (2.8.12) which will discover network printers.
* Installed CUPS and the foomatic drivers.
* I could not get the 2.8.12 version of hp-setup to work but was able to configure using CUPS if I selected the HPLIP interface, used the hp:\\ printer interface (the makeuri utility will help with this) and selected the correct PPD.
All works.
