hi there. I just installed gentoo and installed kde and had it all compiled. I accessed it fine and then did the usual of editing the rc.conf to boot into kdm auto. Now, because of this, it tries to go straight into the kdm but stays at the nvidia logo...

I have now, using the live CD, chrooted into the system and re-commented the section that points to kdm.

Now I can't even load into kdm. I type "#kdm" and nothing happens at all!?

does anyone have any idea why kde was crashing. I think it's something to do with my nvidia card because the video goes weird before it crashes.

anyone? thanks

I don't use Nvidia cards so I can't really help there. but...

1. make sure you can start X from the command line using startx. If this doesn't work, KDM will not work either.

2. Remove kdm from the default startup until you have fixed the problem. rc-update del xdm default

3. Check your /var/log/XFree86.0.log for errors.

On another note, I'm moving this from Installing Gentoo to Desktop since it involves a GUI issue rather than an installation issue.

Thanks for the help. i appreciate it :)

Have removed it from startup. X is already running when I try and run startx. When I type #kdm, nothing happens at all. No error, nothing. Just accepts it and does/says nothing.

any ideas?

So, if you log in as root and run:
/etc/init.d/xdm start

it will not start up a login manager?

But if you just run: startx, it will start an X-windows session and whatever Window manager you are using?

make sure that you don't try to start X windows prior to running /etc/init.d/xdm since X will be started as a part of the job when executing that script.

Also note that you don't have to start X prior to launching KDM, KDM will take care of it for you.

thanks for the reply.

Sorry, ignore the post about x server already running. I can load into kde now. However it doesn't seem to work if I set the machine to auto load it. I'm just wondering if there's a known bug at all?

Thanks :)
