I'm really new to printing in linux, so I need a little advice.

I'm trying to use a shared printer that is connected to a Windows XP machine on my network. I'm having problems though, and I don't know if it's a samba, gnome, or cups problem.

Samba is working, for file sharing at least. I start it up along with cupsd, and fire up gnome-cups-add as root.

First thing I see, is this error message:
Code:

An error occurred while loading or saving configuration information for gnome-cups-add. Some of your configuration settings may not work properly.

Failed to contact configuration server; some possible causes are that you need to enable TCP/IP networking for ORBit, or you have stale NFS locks due to a system crash. See http://www.gnome.org/projects/gconf/ for information. (Details -  1: Failed to get connection to session: Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the network connection was broken.)

I can press 'OK' and it goes away. I don't know if that error message is referring to cups as a configuration server, or what. Next, in the "Add a printer" "Step 1 of 3" window, I choose Printer Type: Network Printer, and then choose Windows Printer (SMB).

Now a little "Authentication Required" box pops up...asking for an Identity and Password for my workgroup...I wasn't aware that I even had one. I don't know what I'm supposed to enter here, but the only entries that make it go away without hanging are 'root' for the user and my samba root user's password for the password. If I enter anything else, (including nothing for both fields) it just hangs when clicking "connect".

Even when I enter the root information for that box though, the Add a Printer window hangs, and stays unresponsive until I kill it.

I don't know what to do. I've looked around and no one seems to have my problem. My windows PC and my linux samba clients are all on the same workgroup. The windows pc network sharing doesn't have any username or password that I know of, but I know even less about windows networking than I do about linux networking - all I did on that machine was run some networking wizard where I told it to share the printers.

Any ideas?

I'll read it over again, but the general impression I got when I read it before creating this thread was that it was for printers attached to linux boxes that a windows box is connecting to to print.
