I bought a jetway mini-itx board with the CX7002m chipset in it. The idea was to make a mythtv front/backend end out of it, my capture card is basically a silicon dust HDHomerun.

Anyway, this chipset is apparently barely supported in the latest ebuilds for openchrome drivers and not at all in the latest ebuild for the via drivers.

What I ended up doing was following some advice here:
http://www.tkarena.com/forums/linux-arena/37285-j7f5m-vhe-via-cx700m-hdmi-video-sound.html

so I went to http://linux.via.com.tw/support/downloadFiles.action and downloaded the source for the via unichrome drivers for ubuntu. These were dated mid august. I followed the build instructions in the readme after untarring it and it was pretty easy to build and install.

Now when X and mythfrontend boot up, the video is not jerky and CPU usage is relatively low. I never have gotten the HDMI out to work though even with the line:

Option "ActiveDevice" "DVI"

in xorg.conf.

in fact doing that made it so I couldn't see it on my VGA output anymore so I had to remove the cmos battery to reset the BIOS. running with

Option "ActiveDevice" "CRT,DVI"

was a bit unstable. I suspect that my older plasma monitor doesn't support the newer HDCP or whatever for hdmi. IF anyone gets hdmi out working with this board I'd appreciate knowing how. Right now I am getting by using the vga input to my plasma screen and using an old usb-spdif box for digital sound out. It works well enough but it would be better if the HDMI worked. I suspect that the support will catch up in a few months.

OK video from DVD or hard disk looks great with mplayer or xine but the case is not so rosey with the tv tuner streamed HD video.

I have reviewed a number of helpful links including this one:

http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/index.php/XvMC#VIA_Unichrome_2

and also this part

http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/index.php/XvMC#Compiling_from_source

during the emerge I get this output:

Code:
# Video Output Support
x11 support               yes
xrandr support            yes
xv support                yes
XvMC support              yes
XvMC VLD support          yes
XvMC pro support          yes
XvMC OpenGL sup.          no
XvMC libs                 -lXvMCW

so it is all accelerated and working with the hand compiled VIA driver. Indeed the video from mplayer and xine looks excellent. So I think I can narrow my problems down to how mythtv handles the video coprocessors. From within myth if I want to watch video or a dvd I have it using mplayer and it looks great and cpu use is around 30%.

I am not sure how to fix mythtv's poor performance when decoding the mpeg2 stream from the HDHomerun device. my next step is to compile VLC (since this works great on my mac with the hdhomerun) and see if there is a way to substitute it for the internal mythtv decoder.

Another thing I want to try is I found a ubuntu forum page where people had jerky video with the via chipsets on kernel's greater then 2.6.23. I am currently running 2.6.25 so maybe I will go back and see if the problem goes away.

still haven't got the hdmi to work but I am least worried about that right now - just would like to watch live tv.

Any progress with either the HDMI or MPEG2 and mythtv?
