I have noticed in gftp my transfer rate seems very slow. I get about 500k/sec thru a 100mbit LAN :( but on windows using flashfxp I get 2500k/sec. Are there any options I need to change etc??? :(

Are you using the same machine both times?

Just to make sure I understand :), you have a dual-boot system running both Gentoo and Windows. When you download/upload a file from that machine to a FTP server, you get different results.

What does "dmesg | egrep eth" say? Do you see a lot of errors when you do a "ifconfig"? Is it possible for you to paste the exact output of your FTP transfer? E.g. "12345 bytes transfered in 9.8 seconds (123 Bytes/sec)" (Numbers do not match up, I just made something up ;) )

Yer I have a dual boot machine atm, but only because some windows progs won't work in linux :(. I tried the two commands you suggested and didn't get any errors.
Code:
# dmesg | egrep eth

transferred a small screenshot image to the system and it seemed to do it at a slightly faster speed than it norm does the bigger files
Code:
200 Port command ok.
STOR /F/pics/screenshot.png
150 Opening BINARY data connection for F:\pics\screenshot.png
226 Transfer finished successfully. Data connection closed.
Successfully transferred /home/equil/screenshot.png at 1384.26 KB/s

would free memory etc maybe make difference ?? as when the transfer rate was low I think my free mem was very low also, atm with its going at 1384.26 KB/s but I've just restarted from windows into linux.

hmm.. wild guess, hdparm -t /dev/hda gives poor results?
tried other clients than gftp? (lftp console for example, I can use flashfxp through wine/gfp, but to be honest, I find lftp WAY better than both of em :) )

ok /me emerge's lftp :P :)
Code:
# hdparm -tT /dev/hda

/dev/hda:
 Timing buffer-cache reads:   128 MB in  0.20 seconds =656.41 MB/sec
 Timing buffered disk reads:  64 MB in  1.39 seconds = 46.04 MB/sec

# hdparm -tT /dev/hdb

/dev/hdb:
 Timing buffer-cache reads:   128 MB in  0.19 seconds =673.68 MB/sec
 Timing buffered disk reads:  64 MB in  1.20 seconds = 53.56 MB/sec

hda is my windows drive and hdb is my linux drive. :) I dunno if they are poor results but seem pretty fast to me :?

both are WD80Gb SE's
