Hi,
you need to be a member of the group 'wheel' to su to root.
Either edit '/etc/group' or use 'usermod' to modify group memberships.
I'm not really sure what you're trying to do with
Code:

su -emerge gaim

The default password for root is random, not the word random but actually random. If you haven't set it you can use the gentoo install cd to fix things.
Hope this helps,
J

You don't 'su' something, when you 'su' you "switch user". It works this way:
Code:
su [login-name]

then you authenticate and "become" the user you specified. 'su' without a login-name defaults to root and 'su -' acts as a login shell (resetting environment variables, something you usually want).

Maybe you are confusing with 'sudo', BTW 'man su' or consulting the mentioned threads might give you informations about the correct usage.
