Hi,

I am currently in the process of backing up most of my DVD collection to my hard disk. The drive I am using is a LiteOn S-ATA DVD-RW drive (20x). I am unsure, however, if it is actually performing at that level (16x - 20x read speed, that is). Is there any way to check what it is reading at, and if necessary change the speed?

I have found quite a few guides for hard disks, but not for DVD drives.

Regards, Freddie.

Use the I/O-meter of your choice (mine is gkrellm).

The "nominal" (aka maximum) performance is 16x1.35 MByte/s which is 21.6 MByte/s Read speed. For 20x it is a little higher. This is by definition only achievable in the last sectors of the disc.

Normally when copying DVDs I get transfer rates of 5 to 8 MByte/s.

That's the difference between marketing and reality :x
