Ok. I have tried everything in the past week to get gentoo installed on my computer and I havent even gotten online yet :oops:

I have downloaded both the gentoo livecd and systemrescuecd, but they both cant connect to the internet and both have different problems...

For now lets stick with the gentoo livecd. When I fire up /etc/init.d/net.eth0 start after booting I get ...

Code:
*Starting eth0
*     Starting netplug on eth0 ... [OK]
*          Backgrounding ...

... but theres no exchange on leasing an IP and of course no connection. I also have a laptop running gentoo that I configured for the same connection and it connects no problem with Gentoo already installed. Both have the same configs as far as I know.

Anybody else having this problem?:?:

Would you please provide some detail of the problematic computer? The output of lspci
I have a computer based on an ASUS M2N-E MB. That motherboard provides an integrated network interface. I have never been able to get that interface to work, despite major efforts to do so. I finally gave up (admitted defeat) and put in an old network card I had laying around, which works good enough for me.

Because Im writing this from my laptop connected to the internet, I cannot post in great detail because I cannot c/p anything. I using a dual ethernet controller: Marvell 88E8001 and 88E8056.

Hmmm... Im using a ASUS P5Q Deluxe mobo and I have had it connected to the web before in a previous install. Im going to have a check and see if there is a BIOS update for it if that might solve anything.

In my case (M2N-E) there is just one interface that is based on the Marvell 8E1116 PHY. Personally, I think my problems are due to a bug in the kernel driver marvell.c. At least that is the only explanation I have been able to find that makes any sense to me.

I assume you have updated your kernel to support the Marvel PHY, but it can't hurt to ask since this isn't obvious (at least it wasn't to me).
Check:
Device Drivers --> Network device support --> PHY Device support and ...
You need to select the Drivers for Marvell PHYs
My bet is that your interfaces use the forcedeth driver. That is selected in the "Ethernet (10 or 100MBit)" section (nForce ethernet support).

But my prob is while using the livecd right ... it seems to be autodetecting the sky2, forcedeth, tg3, and skge modules.

Found a BIOS update, but just working out how to make a boot cd now.

Still no connection tho ...

Sorry for the late followup.

Solved the problem, but probably not all can benefit from my solution... I stuck a router in between the connection and the puter. The router first calls for a DHCP IP and then (for whatever reason) the puter has no problem getting its IP via DHCP from the router.

Now I can install :D but dont know if its this is a solution for other ppl.
