Alright - I got x up and running, sort of: When I click startx, it launches, but with corruption at the top of the screen. The mouse also doesn't work. About 10 seconds later, it all of sudden shakes and then reappears fine. And the mouse works. Suggestions? The only thing I know is if I try to force 1024x768 with 16bit color, it says it can't detect any screens, so I think it may be an error with the resolution. However, I know that the refrsh rates are fine, and the LCD is capable of up to 24 Bit color at 1024x764.
Thanks for all your help guys and gals, I've already found more help here than anywhere else.
Tim
Edit: fixed some stuff |

My old S3 Virge does exactly the same thing.
Also, when I switch from X back into the consoles, a few lines at the bottom of the screen are missing.
It only goes away when I use the old Xfree 3.3.6 S3Virge server in Xfree 4.3. |

Thanks!

How?
In Gentoo bugzilla is a Xfree 3.3.6 ebuild: https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1186
Build that one as a package (emerge --B). Do not try to use it, since gentoo has not been designed for Xfree 3.x
Get into the package, and copy the S3virge server executable into your /usr/X11R6/bin directory and make a symlink from the executable to /usr/X11R6/bin/X .
Note: the Xfree config file now used is /etc/XF86Config, and no longer /etc/X11/XF86Config.
Thant's about it. |
