Squirrelmail: Error opening ../data/default_pref

When I try to login with a new user (that never has logged in before) Squirrelmail complains that ../data/default_pref is not writeable.
I tried to fix this. I even set the directory and the file to 777. But no result.

Users that logged in before, do not have this problem.

Does someone know how to fix this?
