Here is the one I use on my forum with the kids @ school:
1. n00bie
2. Im in!
3. I like to talk
4. My opinion matters.
5. I just DONT shut up, do I?
6. That duck tape mob is after me.
If they get over 500 posts (its a low post forum)
I will give them their own title. _________________ iMac G4 1GHz :: q6600 //2x 500GB//2GB RAM//8600GT//Gentoo :: MacBook Pro//2.53GHz |

Anyone want to clue me in why we as gentoo users have to live through more 1337 crap?
(I'm talking about the "forum ranking")
I could care less about someone's ranking...Though sometimes I find the shear number of posts someone has made to be quite interesting (especially when they are complete idiots).
I will admit that I don't ever know what someone means when they use these words. I'm using the term word pretty loosely here. I always wondered how someone could feel smart by using something that doesn't make anysense in the first place. I like this site: http://umanwizard.com/1337.html
I love gentoo, and I love the forums. I have learned more from this distribution than I have in 10 years of computing, and this forum and the people on it have helped me acheived this. So I don't under stand why we support a lame, immature and idiotic use of language. Am I alone in this?
What do others have to say about this? _________________ Why must we hear what system you're running gentoo on, especially if all you've got is a measly gig of ram or 3gHz processor?
I want to see signatures boasting 25 cpu clusters and blade severs, or a big 'ole onyx..anyone running gentoo on an onxy?? |

The way I see it is if a user has a massive amount of posts they either help a lot of people or ask an awful amount of questions needing help |

Holy Larry-the-Cow! We're 5 pages into this thread and nobody has listed an obvious choice for the pengin list -- isn't everyone familiar with the Jackass Penguin? |

There's so much potential to that. Imagine every spammer account being labeled as Jackass penguins. _________________ if i never try anything, i never learn anything..

|
|
Hello all....
After having been part of the gentoo community since the first beta releases of the OS... I feel that I am fairly learned in the ways of the Gentoo.... _however_ my ranking here in the forums begs to differ (Apprentice! Bah!)
I propose that a second system be implemented for ranking people in the forums... one which depends upon the amount of time you have been a member....
For every year of being a forum member your rank should get bumped _once_. So with me having been a member for over 3 years... I should be 3 ranks higher than where I am now I shouldn't get penalized just because I'm more of a lurker
Of course this is mostly tongue in cheek (mostly...).... but it would be cool if somehow there was recognition of "years of service"

I would understand your issue, if beeing guru, veteran, whatever... brings you any benefit. But it does not! I don't think that anyone here gives anything about the title a nick has (except if it would be admin, moderator, ...)
cheers

I agree with steveb. You should read some of the posts by people with higher rankings. More posts, and/or more time doesn't always make for more learned. Actually, that is kind of an argument supporting your case isn't it? Hmmm. I know I had a point when I started to type this... |

Crikey. Since it's meaningless anyway, let's make it meaningless.
Carp
Biedermayer
Fumarole
Pickle
Hyperbola
Foot
Damn, there's meaning after all: I'm a Carp and I'm carping. _________________ Plants are pithy, brooks tend to babble--I'm content to lie between them.

It's not really bugging me but imho "n00b" is a very negative term and therefor shouldn't be the first title you get when you are new to the forums. Why not just use "newbie" or "beginner" instead? |

Yeah, it's annoying leet, sorry 1337, speak, but it's unlikely to be changed. If nothing else, it motivates people to participate so they can rid themselves of the crap ranking. _________________ Thomas S. Howard |

Folks, just another opinion on the way the ranking is determined.
It is on the number of the followers of the raised topic. If it grows in time then the discussion is relevant for the community. |

Was that really necessary? On a nearly twenty year old thread, that hasn't been posted in for fourteen?
I'm glad the phpBB3 upgrade will do away with this ranking system entirely. It's stupid and reeks of turn-of-the-century internet elitism. |

Damn straight! The last thing this this forum needs is a injection of informalness and fun. And we know the only elitist rank that matters on this forum is one that starts with D and rhymes with interloper. _________________ OTW 2.0
