Posted: Wed Aug 06, 2003 3:56 pm Post subject: New Ranking System - Will the l33tness Stop? |
|
|
Over at this thread people have been voting wether the "l33t" rank should be replaced or not. Atm 77% (100 votes) wants this l33tness to stop and the rest (22 votes) wants it to stay. As you can see from the topic, many users wanted the whole ranking system changed and quite a few came with their own ideas. Seeing that this thread has not lead to any changes, I thought I would take the iniative and create this poll. Some of the options have more ranks than other, but you'll get the general idea. Also, feel free to come up with you own ideas and oppinions.
I'm just trying to get the snowball running here, since I myself and a majority of the other users want's a change (atleast the users who have been voting in the original poll). I'll make this poll run for a weak and see how it ends. But it isn't certain that the winner will be swapped with the existing rankings. Thats up to the moderators and admins. But the more people who post and vote in favor of a change, the more likely a new rankings system will be made.

I remember seeing a proposition of a rank based on the free time of the poster, I thought that was the best but I don't see it here _________________ I am Beta, don't expect correct behaviour from me.

I really like #2 - ranking based on types of penguins. |

I thought
n00b
tux's lil' helper
apprentice
l33t
guru
veteran
was the current.
The only thing that is bothering me is that guru comes before veteran. I think it should be the other way around. |

I like #7, because it actually has some meaningful value as to the experience of the user. I would also like there to be some point that you can make your own tag, maybe once you've got 500 posts or something. The ut2003 board I used to post on had something like that. _________________ If you can't make it work the right way, hack it. |

The addition of your own custom tag seems interesting, but 500 posts is a bit low IMO. But we still need some standard tags though... Keep voting |

How does #7 show anyone's experience with Gentoo if the person spends most of their time debating the merits of allowing lesbian space aliens to carry guns on Off the Wall?
The number of posts does not have anything to do with someone's experience, so number 6 is the most accurate description of what the title denotes: Number of posts. |

I agree. This Forum is not a contest to see who can reach 5000 post or something. I can see how 6 is the most accurate, but no 3 is my personal favorite.
Also, if any Mods read this. If you are FOR this, can you please make this a sticky? |

The titles that don't really mean anything, like penguin names, is fine too. Nobody is going to remember which penguin is higher on the food chain but they can still see the number of posts below the title. |

Bumping a dead thread every minute doesn't necessarily reflect experience.

I like number 6, it has more to do with how many posts there are in the forum instead of how good they are in Linux, which the two don't always go hand in hand...

Newcomer would be neutral, but I think that there should be a time limit in that case. If you're a truly occasional poster you can be a newcomer for years, which seems counter intuitive. Perhaps it would be possible to base the rating on number of posts per day also. |

I say either leave it the way it is or go for number 2. Most of the other suggestions seem way too bland to me. Or inappropriate to the content of these forums (like the star wars suggestion). The penguins one at least is suggestive of Linux. Plus it's fun, which is the only point of the rankings... |

I like #3. It has a sense of respect without taking itself too seriously -- ascending ranks suggest that the user has probably learned a thing or two, but it still lets the post speak for itself. (That's my only real concern about the ranks, that they be confused for an easy way to judge the merits or a post or the knowledge of the user.)
#2 looks more popular, but I think just picking species names is too arbitrary. There's a couple different ways that list might be ordered, and I'm just not sure how a newcomer would interpret that.
As for the rest... eh, I like penguins :)
[geek] My only quibble with #3 is that Moulting should technically be before Adult -- penguins don't have their adult plumage until after their first molt. [/geek] _________________ It is not like the world will end if I take the day off from eating worlds. |

I voted for number three just because it would mean I would get to be a chick for 100 or so posts. |

I'm with Megaptera on this poll. #3 seems to be the best and more "original" alternative, #2 in second.
Things like Novice and Hacker are too cliche, and do not necessarily reflect the reality. This is not a Star Wars or weaponry forum either, and as much as I like Star Wars and guns, I think #4 and #5 are pushing it too far. _________________ Hello. |

Exactly. Once it calculates amount of posts the ENglish should reflect that fact, nothing else.
If we wanna have ranks - let's modify the ranking moderation system at first: add the karma concept like in slashdot, let moderators and metamoderators to do their job. Besides, let the karma arise up after the submitted ebuilds are committed, and let the karma fall down when the ebuilds get bugs confirmed.
Untill then - no ranks, only post statistics. _________________ Less is more! |

Or, we could *gasp* just skip the tags alltogether. Postcount is silly IMHO. |

i like the idea to base the "ranks" on names of penguins.
still, i think one could make them a bit funnier, why not start as an egg to finally become a grown up gentoo?
edit: damn, i'm too stupid to read, there's already an option starting with egg |

does it really matter? I mean it's not a serious thing anyways... I dunno.. just seems silly to worry about it.. when we could be worrying about finding bugs in gentoo or something _________________ Kororaa install method - have Gentoo up and running quickly and easily, fully automated with an installer! |
