Forgive me for this very noob question, but once I've emerged gcc3.1, how do I switch to it? I have ecited the symlink in /etc/make.profile to point at /usr/portage/profiles/default-1.0-gcc3, still gcc --version tells me I've got gcc2.95, and if I try to emerge anything, it tells me that the compiler cannot make executables. What did I miss?

thanks a lot

If you have emerged gcc 3.1 alongside 2.95.3, you should have both compilers installed on your system. The executables for 3.1 will have a -3.1 suffix, like gcc-3.1, g++-3.1, cxxfilt-3.1, etc, so you can invoke them explicitly that way.

For lots of software (esp. that that uses autoconf), you can set the environment variable CC to use 3.1. For example, you could put CC=gcc-3.1 into your make.conf and many newly emerged packages will use GCC 3.1.

If you do not have a /usr/bin/gcc-3.1 executable, the gcc 3.1 emerge did not complete correctly. Try to check the contents of it with
Code:
qpkg -l gcc-3.1

The message about the compiler not being able to create executables is also worrisome. Look for the file "config.log" in the directory of the software that is not building correctly (assuming it is using autoconf), and perhaps more useful information will be in there.

The more explicit error messages and specific questions you can post, the more useful answers you are likely to receive.

Maybe you have an incorrect -march in your /etc/make.conf?
That produce the "cannot make executables" error for me.

well, it did not work, emerge system borked on ncurses
so I reinstalled from scratch from a 1.3a iso, using stage 2 tarball
so far so good, though X and KDE are still before me

what I noticed is, that although I specified athlon-xp optimization settings in my make.conf before emerging system, 90% of the apps still were compiled with -mcpu=i686 -O2; are my settings overridden by the ebuilds, or did I miss something?
