I'm doing a 1.4 Final install today after being unsuccesful (because of my hardware) with !.4 RC4. Anyway, I was wondering what USE flags do, and what I should put in my make.conf file. Any suggestions?
Also, what should I set my CFLAGS and CXXFLAGS to? I want THE best performance (that I can get out of a stage 3 install, at least). I have an Athlon XP CD1 and an Athlon XP 2100+. _________________ old outdated sig |

USE flags:
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/use-howto.xml
CFLAGS, CXXFLAGS:
I'd suggest reading man gcc and searching the forums for make.conf for people with similar architecture. I have a P4, so I can't be certain, but you'd probably be safe with the following:
CFLAGS="-march=athlon-xp -O3 -pipe -fomit-frame-pointer"
Good Luck!

I have a laptop with a P-4m and I too saw the warning in the make.conf file telling me not to use the pentium4 flag, however that error is fixed in gcc verion 3.2.3 which is what came with 1.4_rc3 when I installed it 3 days ago. I have since sucessfully changed my make.conf file to use the pentium4 flag, run "emerge -e world" and everything works fine. I would say it is perfectly safe to use the pentium4 flag. |
