I've tried re-installing sys-apps/dbus1.2.3-r1 and restarting it with no success. My xorg has vesa as the video driver and does not see my intel video card. I also have no mouse. In make.conf my I have VIDEO_CARDS="intel vesa" If anyone has any suggestion would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance for any assistance!

Do you have ConsoleKit (sys-auth/consolekit) installed and set up as a service? Check "emerge -pv consolekit" and the output of "rc-status".

Yes, but is there a physical video card? I'm just confused. Cause look mine...

For a start, remove mouse and kbd from your system. evdev is the way to go (having set CONFIG_INPUT_EVDEV in your kernel is a prerequisite).

INPUT_DEVICES="evdev"
VIDEO_DEVICES="intel"

Rebuild xorg-server. Read about migration to hal input autoconfig and follow the instructions after the rebuild has finished. Remove your xorg.conf or rename it as backup, but you shouldn't need it anymore.

PS: Upgrade your kernel to a reasonable version. You already have linux-headers-2.6.28 installed, go for a recent *-sources-2.6.28 flavour. You might even be interested in the latest 2.6.29_rc with its kernel mode setting grace.

PPS: Why did you put vesa in your xorg.conf when you really wanted to use "intel" instead?

If I may ask, what's the advantage of switching from keyboard/mouse to generic input?

Ah, I see. Good point. I'm actually doing a fresh install right now, still running from X alone. So I'll try that out if KDE ever installs.

FINALLY! A reasonable response. Thanks genstorm. I have gentoo-sources-2.6.28 for a kernel. I thought in the beginning it might be the kernel so I installed an older version hoping this would correct my issue. I am running 2.6.28 now, and I did a search on gentoo-wiki and did discover that the kernel did need to be tweaked a bit. I will definitely look into migrating to hal input autoconfig. I changed my INPUT_DEVICES="evdev" and took out vesa in VIDEO_CARDS, leaving intel in there. I was told to always add my current video card driver ( nvidia, fgrlx, intel, etc. ) and have vesa in there as well as a safety net. I will let you know how it worked out as soon as xorg is finished and my kernel is finished building. Thanks for the advice and the help!

Also make sure you have added hald in the default runlevel as it will be needed to get working mouse and keyboard (in X) from now on.

I also had vesa in my make.conf in the olden days, but soon worked out that there's always the terminal as a safety net.

In case your X won't work afterwards, grep "(EE)" your /var/log/Xorg.0.conf for errors. You might still need to keep a Section "Device" in there where you define the intel driver to be loaded, although in theory it shouldn't need that anymore. I tested that on my notebook with the radeon driver and it worked, but I still need that section on my desktop for the proprietary nvidia driver.

Well, it did not work. My Xorg.0.log can be seen here:

Edit: I just unmerged vesa with no luck.

I have now tried dropping down my kernel from 2.6.28-r1 to 2.6.27-r7 ( I read that the 2.6.28 does not work with intel cards ), I have tried to rebuild my intel drivers, mesa, xorg-server, vesa, read an old archive on gentoo-wiki about compiling the kernel properly, and still unsuccessful. My Xorg.0.log can be seen here: http://dpaste.com/112844/ and the following is my xorg.conf:

I have made one more attempt, it was a longshot but worth a try. I changed in my xorg.conf:

Section "Device"

Identifier "Card0"
Driver "intel"
VendorName "Intel Corporation"
BoardName "82815 CGC [Chipset Graphics Controller]"

EndSection

and returned this error when I tried startx:
