Hi!
I have soprano compiled with the sesame2 USE flag, no problem at all compiling, my JRE version:
Code: | condex@condexnotebook ~ $ java -version
java version "1.6.0_11"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_11-b03)
Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 11.0-b16, mixed mode, sharing) |
I don't have the JRE package installed, I'm running the VM that comes with the JDK(the same I guess).
On my home computer is the same, but using the 64-bit version.
Hope it's useful _________________ Carpe diem quam minimum credula postero. |

Sorry guys, I come as a pretty dumb outsider, but reading (& trying out) the KDE 4.x guide I'm still without clues. The guide seems to assume that you already have an old test version of KDE 4 w/full setup in your living room (ahem, on your disk ) So how does a normal man without overlay & amd64 non-testing portage version upgrade from KDE 3.5 to 4.2? |

That's an X bug, fixed in 1.6. |
Are there already ebuilds around for the new xorg? (with xorg-server 1.6)
As far as I can see not in the official portage tree, but maybe in an overlay?
As far as I am informed there is already an official release candidate out.

x11 overlay makes you happy.
@Flarkis: I don't have nepomuk or soprano installed. |

@genstorm

@Genstorm
Thanks, got it. Seems to work fine now, with BackingStore enabled, which gives a bit of a speed boost for nvidia users.
@Flarkis
I had problems with Suns JRE 1.6.0_12 as well, while it got my 1.6.0_11 right.
I just manually set JAVA_HOME to the absolute location (not the symlink) before emerging soprano, and since then it works as well. Try it.

Do you have any actual numbers of that from the 180.xx series? I haven't seen it being needed in quite a long time. |

What mplayer backend are you using? If you are using the one supplied with mplayer than there is your problem, it is horrendously out of date and unkept. Try using something like smplayer. _________________ Veni, Vidi, Vici

Nah, not really. Without it in in some cases (especially desktop switch to a desktop with no window) there was visible stuttering which is not there any more. So it is more a general feeling of constant speed than a benchmark. There was another user in the nvidia forums (nvnews.net) with the same experiences, but it might be that this is limited to a set of cards. Mine is a nvs140 (which is the quadro version of a G8400M) with shared memory.
Kind regards

Thanks, I think this will work. I had gtk use flag enabled, I saw a message default backend is unsopported by Gentoo.
Edit: no, still have the same problem with Smplayer. I've opened new topic, to discuss about my problem.

Probably a graphics card issue than
UPDATE: well kde is doing a little better this time around. I can actually use strigi now and i can change my power plan from the plasma app. Im going to try getting the gtk engines 2night and ill try hiting that darn more button in the power app after i post this.
Another question, when im loading KDE when it shows the actualy KDE logo (the final logo in the loading sequence), it flashes 2 times before kde actually opens. Does anyone else have this problem, there was nothing in my xorg log to make me think something weird is happening.
UPDATE2: well something must be doing better, kde still freezes but now atleast i can turn off my computer using the power button, which in turn means i have an xorg.0.log

the (II) NVIDIA(0): Setting mode "1280x800_60+0+0" happens when i open the nvidia control panel, i tried one time before this without opening it. So now it appears to be a wonderfull nvidia error, so i appologize to everyone for me be complaining about kde...my problems are instead a closed source driver...hmmmm...
UPDATE3: xrender solves all my problems but i just turned desktop effects off for now, guess i have to wait for a new nvidia driver...sigh _________________ Veni, Vidi, Vici

How does one get kde 4.2 to suspend to ram correctly? I can type 'sudo hibernate-ram' in the terminal and it'll do it, but clicking on 'sleep' in the battery applet only locks the screen and selecting 'suspend to ram' in the shutdown dialog does nothing. |

Make sure that the pm-utils work for you, kde uses those by default.

got a question, does switch user works well on kde4.2?
if so, there is a chance I'll take the plunge and upgrade this weekend.
currently, I have a problem in kde3.5.9 where my computer freezes when I try to switch user when one is active. _________________ Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity and I'm not sure about the former - Albert Einstein |

nvidia drivers are 180.29
There is a 20+ page forum on the nv news forums called "180.* graphical corruption and freezes system" im currently looking through that to see if i can find a work around. Now if only i could fix that darn amarok problem. The old mysql hack doesnt work anymore, but i did read somewhere u need a special patch to use qt 4.5 so ill try that soon.
Which drivers/xorg/kernel are you using?
EDIT: also how much ram do you have, so far reading the forum everyone with 2G or more of ram suffers these problems, and one guy downgraded to 1G ram and his problems disappeared _________________ Veni, Vidi, Vici

I think that someone already mentioned problem with Xext/XSync and Powerdevil in this topic. Powerdevil complains that it was compiled without Xext support, despite I have xext use flag enabled. Is there maybe any solution? |

nvidia-drivers-180.29, xorg-x11-7.4/xorg-server-1.5.3-r2, gentoo-sources-2.6.28-r2, gcc-4.3.2-r3, glibc-2.9_p20081201-r2
Also, with 8G of RAM I can't report any problems, I'm hearing that for the first time.
Nvidia seems to focus on (which really is an euphemism for: they drop any work on older versions) xorg-server-1.5 with their 180.xx series, and in fact many problems including kwin and plasma crashing seem to relate to the combination of 180.xx and xorg-server.1.3* |

The only difference i see there is really that you have kernel 2.6.28. Unfortunately i can't use the gentoo source because i need reiser4 support. I think there were some sources called "hitchhiker-srouces" that were just gentoo-sources+reiser4+squishfs ... Since im using xprg-server 1.5 i dont think thats the problem. And im about 15 pages into the thread on nv news now...still nothing...even more out of these 15 pages nvidia has only made one comment.
UPDATE:Different kernel doesn't help. More so looking through my system log i found this which tells me i have the exact same problem as the people in the nv news forum.

Darn nvidia, i chose an nvidia card because ATI killed my last computer when they stopped supporting my card and i was forced to go to windows again. Now nvidia give me this... |
ati's free driver works for all cards that were too old for the fglrx driver. |

Not the 9200SE, the plague of video cards. Upon loading the radeon driver the kernel would panic. So 90% of distros wouldn't boot from a live CD so i couldn't install. They fixed the problem about 3 months before i got my new computer, which is in turn about 3 months before i left the country for a year long exchange. When i go back i plan on giving it a nice big hard drive and just using it as a MythTV server. _________________ Veni, Vidi, Vici

What GPU do you have?
Watching the stabilization bug I just noticed that I had 16 X11 packages not yet up to latest ~arch (e.g. mesa-7.3). I've just updated them via 'x11.stable.list' and will see if my system remains stable. Of course I've recorded those candidates.
EDIT: So far, no errors. Clean dmesg as well as Xorg.0.log. |
