Yeah, that got me... I've been following the banners on www.kde.org for two weeks and actually found myself getting excited yesterday when it said "KDE 4.2 will be released tomorrow". I didn't even check this morning, I just did a sync in the blind hope there'd already be an ebuild in the tree. Not there... www.kde.org... "KDE 4.2 will be released today". Not "KDE 4.2 is released, click here to download". :-(

Oh well, I guess it just builds the tension a bit longer!

(Yes, I know it's pathetic to get so excited about a desktop environment... I'm 26, yet I feel like a 5 year old on Christmas eve!)

I think as soon as those tarballs roll we will have the ebuilds also.

They are being transferred to portage tree at the moment.

I've just sync'd and got a lot of 4.2 packages, but am definitely missing at least the meta packages. Also, looking on packages.gentoo.org, they're all hard masked. I guess they'll be unmasked once they're all there.

The meta packages of kde 4.2 will never come out. That have changed. Now you need the latest portage and must emerge kde 4.2 with "emerge @kde" or when you want 4.2 and no updates to 4.3 when it comes "emerge @kde-4.2".
I have running kde 4.2rc1 at the moment and will update now.

Code:
('Filesize does not match recorded size', 69901790, 69963743)
!!! Fetched file: kdebase-runtime-4.2.0.tar.bz2 VERIFY FAILED!
!!! Reason: Filesize does not match recorded size
!!! Got:      69901790
!!! Expected: 69963743

Very strange... Syncing didn't help. Ebuild in main tree works fine though.

Is there an easy way to upgrade 4.1.3 -> 4.2 ? From my understanding the 4.2 packages are slotted. But I don't really care about 4.1 once I get 4.2, is there a way to force an upgrade instead of installing 4.2 then manually removing 4.1?

There are a couple of other threads mentioning that...seems the filesizes in the tree don't match the ebuilds currently...makes sense some would change.

check http://www.gentoo.org/proj/en/desktop/kde/kde4-guide.xml
but how do you easily upgrade from 3.5.9 to 4.2?

and where can I get these slots? Can I use the slots from kde-testing or are they incompatible?

Code:
# emerge @kdebase-4.2
Calculating dependencies... done!

emerge: there are no ebuilds to satisfy "kde-base/kcontrol:4.2".

okay, it seems that the portage isn't fully bumped to 4.2.0 yet. It seems I need to wait :)

While portage-2.2 is required, the sets do not appear to have been merged into the tree yet. In addition, while using the sets from kde-testing sees to be possible, the main tree is missing quite a few packages necessary to install 4.2. So at the moment the only option seems to be just using the kde-testing overlay.

I was able to merge kdelibs-4.2 from the tree, but after that got stuck with the lack of akonadi server
Code:

# emerge -pv kcontrol

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies... done!

emerge: there are no ebuilds to satisfy ">=app-office/akonadi-server-1.1".
(dependency required by "kde-base/kdepimlibs-4.2.0" [ebuild])
(dependency required by "kde-base/kcontrol-4.2.0" [ebuild])
(dependency required by "kcontrol" [argument])
