vcron dcron fcron, what are all these cron's have in difference?
metalog syslog-ng msyslog sysklogd , what are the difference for these log's.
i searched the net, couldnt find anything good. _________________ I do what I want, and that's what I do.

Don't know about the cron daemons, but there are a lot of differences between the loggers. For instance, metalog uses output buffering to improve performance, so logs are not in realtime (it can be disabled). syslog-ng has support for network logging and is very flexible. syslogd is the old standard daemon.
Best way to compare them is to check their websites and see which one you like best. |

Yeah, you can turn metalog buffering on/off with "killall -USR1 metalog" and "killall -USR2 metalog", however it is a pain to have to do this. Also with the non-standard loggers, things like /var/log/messages might be different, which could confuse you when reading howtos and such. For example metalog doesn't have a /var/log/messages at all, I usually resort to /var/log/everything/current instead.
I think of vcron as a bit like the "grub of cronners" in that it doesn't need you to run a program once you alter the config file, but I don't know much about the other two. |
