Hi!
I'm think of installing on my current Gentoo x86 a Gentoo x64 version.
The CPU on my PC is Intel PentiumD 950.
Is it possible that a MB doesn't support 64-bits, while the CPU does and even if the CPU is working fine in x86?
I have made successful Gentoo x86 installations and maybe I could install one with my eyes closed, but I have never done a x64 version.
Does the installation differs much from x86?
Friend said that only Stage3 needs to be x64, kernel support for x64 and the Minimal-CD needs to be x64.
But there could turn out a problem with my current servers on x86.
One of the server requires x86 and gcc 4.2.2 and this "switch to gcc 4.2.2: gcc-config i686-pc-linux-gnu-4.2.2" also requires libcurl.
The other one is simply x86 only.
These servers should be running on this box: lighttpd+php, mysql, postfix, pure-ftpd.
Apps like screen, openssl and some libraries will be required.
Could there be any problems by installing Gentoo x64 and running the servers?
And is hardened profile for x64? _________________ Give me a cookie ^^ |

why not install an x86_64(amd64) / in a new partition and dual boot until comfortable?
boot a 64 bit cd to answer motherboard compatibility question.
installs essentially identical, use the amd 64 handbook.
there is hardened profile for x86_64
you could use your current x86 install to do partitions, file systems, and stage and portage snapshot installs, but you should have a 64 bit cd to use for entering chroot on the 64 bit install.
stage 3 installs are the only officially supported installs this year. |

I read through the x64 hanbook, couldn't see any much differences.
When I will need to install the 64-bit version everything will must go, won't use any extra partitions.
Isn't x86_64 for AMD only and for Intels there is EM64T?
This CPU has EM64T support only, couldn't see x86_64 support and Wiki brought up "only for AMD".
What about the apps?
Hardened amd64 profile got multilib profile also, will that work for the server that only come in x86? _________________ Give me a cookie ^^ |

Even when the 64 bits instruction sets in an Intel processor are called EMT64, the 64 bits architecture is called AMD64 only because AMD was first having such processors, the same as i686 is called i because Intel was the first one.

Just try booting a 64 bit cd, system rescue cd, gentoo minimal or, ubuntu, whatever and get the definitive answers for your hardware. If it works it works and will work if installed; if it doesn't reboot your current system. |
