It started happening after I had to reinstall Gentoo a few months back. It all looks like the xorg server now gets somehow "clogged up" after running for some time. The most evident symptoms are a strange horizontal tearing in HD movies (720p) with xv output and reduced framerate in games (tested on Freespace 2 SCP). I don't know if it's just running for a specified amount of time, or some specific condition that does trigger it, but it kicks in after about 5-15 minutes of normal web browsing and stuff. After restarting the X server (logging out and in is not enough) the symptoms disappear.

The tearing I'm talking about can be seen here: http://www.dailymotion.pl/pmts/video/13864725 and here: http://imagebin.ca/view/iuQ2rK0.html -- it's just one horizontal line, always at the same height. Also I noticed increased CPU usage when this happens.

If anyone have an idea what may cause this, any help will be much appreciated.

Are you sure it's not a monitor issue? Try another monitor or the same monitor with other computer. Also check Xorg.log for errors/warnings.

In fact, it can be a hardware problem.

If it was a monitor problem, it wouldn't reduce fps in games, and wouldn't go away after restarting X. It's rather not a hardware problem, as everything is working well in Windows XP

EDIT: here's my xorg log:

It looks like you've yet to run nvidia-settings. If so, run it and set the X Server XVideo Settings to sync to vblank. Once that is done, to insure that the nvidia settings load each time you run X, add this line to your ~/.xinitrc as the first line:
Code:
exec nvidia-settings --load-config-only &

With that done, your nvidia settings will be used each time you start X. When those settings are correct, you will have no more issues with video tear.

Blessed be!

Nope, it doesn't solve it.

Post the results of eselect opengl list and eselect xvmc list.

Blessed be!

Posting:
Code:
# eselect opengl list
Available OpenGL implementations:
  [1]   nvidia *
  [2]   xorg-x11

# eselect xvmc list
Available XvMC implementations ( * is current ):
  [1]   nvidia *
  [2]   xorg-x11

Both are irrelevant however, as desktop compositing works fine, and I don't use xvmc at all.

I'm telling you, it's some really silly bug and it's not going to be that easy ;p

Post ~/.nvidia-settings-rc. As long as you installed the driver right, which you obviously did, and as long as you have opengl and xvmc right (and you do), I can't imagine why things wouldn't be working. It's not like you're setting up an Intel video chip.

Blessed be!

Here it is:
Code:

But I don't have anything like "nvidia-settings --load-config-only" set up, so this file doesn't really do anything, right?

No, set up like that, it doesn't. But, if you start nvidia-settings, set the video to sync to vblank, then watch a DVD, you'll get a picture that's watchable. You won't get the video tear that you're experiencing. Unless you tell the computer to reload those settings with exec nvidia-settings --load-config-only && as the first line of ~/.xinitrc, they won't load for your next X session, until you open nvidia-settings again.

Just for reference, here is my ~/.nvidia-settings-rc. I can watch any DVD without one bit of distortion. Give it a try.
Code:
#
# /root/.nvidia-settings-rc
#
# Configuration file for nvidia-settings - the NVIDIA X Server Settings utility
# Generated on Wed Feb  4 15:27:57 2009
#

# ConfigProperties:

Well, the funny thing is that this tearing issue comes only with HD movies. I can watch DVDs just fine. And enabling syncing to vblank doesn't solve that - I've already said that before. I also said that it starts to happen only after X is running for some time. I can watch a movie without this tearing if I restart X server first. That rules out (i think) some silly basic misconfiguration.

First of all, no need to be snarky. I'm trying to help. It seems I'm the only one, too. So, consider that.

Secondly, It WILL wind up being a silly misconfiguration. That is fairly obvious. If it were configured properly, you wouldn't be having your problem, now would you? Sounds pretty silly to me!

Third, if you're going to be so demanding in your role as hapless user, I'll gladly step back and let someone else deal with you. I'm not getting paid for this, so as far as I'm concerned, it's time for you to do some experimenting on your own, or find someone who doesn't mind being snapped at while trying to help. I have unsubscribed from this thread as of now.

Err.... what?

You proposed a solution. I said it didn't work and mentioned that I've said it earlier. I don't really understand your point...
