Ok, this one is strange.

I've got 5 NFS servers and two client servers. All Gentoo, all fully up to date, except for maybe the kernels which are all 2.6.

The two client servers can mount the NFS shares on all servers. However one client server cannot write to a particular NFS share. It can mount it and read the contents, but cannot modify, delete or create files. Files also open up as "read only". The other client server has no problem with the same share. This is all being tested as the root user.

The error that is returned when trying to create or touch a file is "Permission denied" Not Permission denied by server. It seems to be a local issue. There is nothing in the client or nfs server logs. This server has no problem mounting and writing to any other NFS share.

I've tried creating a new mount point, running fsck on the local FS and the NFS FS, but nothing makes any difference.

It's a pretty simple set up that's been working fine for over two years. This started happening over that last couple of days. This is on an isolated network with no end user access. The shares are for server to server only.

All NFS servers have a single export, all with the same entry in the exportfs file: /mnt/array *(rw,mp,no_root_squash)

All NFS client servers mount the shares in the same way using this command: mount -t nfs 192.168.40.40:/mnt/array /mnt/array

Any suggestions?

Thanks

Ok, so it turns out that the server in question actually was not fully up to date as I could have sworn. After 97 updates, all is good again. Who knows which one fixed it. Probably nfs-utils.

I've had basically the same problem, and I think you are right about nfs-utils. I have temporarily downgraded net-fs/nfs-utils to 1.1.0-r1 on an NFS client which displayed the above symptoms (problem arose after upgrade to 1.1.3)
