Hey everybody,

I have been running gentoo for some time now and I have a problem. My motherboard is on its last legs and needs to be replaced. The bigger problem is, this was the last computer I put together, and that was over 7 years ago. To make matters worse, I have not kept up with motherboard changes. I was wondering if anyone out there might be able to help me find the supported hardware I need. I will post a list of what I need if anyone is willing to help.

So the basics:
1. What you need? (list of parts)
2. What for?
3. Budget?

Do you care either way?

What do you want to carry over?

If he wants a Phenom Quad Core, then a Asus P5Q-Deluxe will not work with that.

So, the CPU is pretty important in that case and also the budget...

I meant both questions for RockClimb, some people are open to either and there are cases were other makers would also be worth considering, so an explicit lack of preference would be something worth knowing before giving advice.

1. I would like to be able to move my current gentoo build over. I realize that may not be easy, but I finally have it set up the way I want it and have grown quite fond of it. :D It was built with CFLAGS="-march=athlon-xp -O3 -pipe" and the SMP use flag as it is a dual cpu box. It is still functional, but it locks up 4-5 times a week (bad pic chip), so a package rebuild could still be done, though I might need a little help with that. (EDIT: found the guide, I remember doing this a while back... will not be an issue)

If would also like to reuse some my existing cards/drives if at all possible to keep the costs down

2. I prefer AMD.

3. List of parts.
a. motherboard, memory, cpu of course
b. 2 network cards (can be built in to mb, not picky)
c. 3 video cards (it is a tri-head system, 1 could be built in)
d. I think I should also replace the power supply
e. tv tuner card (something that will work well with mythtv)
f. sound card, serial port, usb (can all be built in, can get by with out serial port)

4. As cheaply as possible, but I want good hardware. I want a good fast computer, but it doesn't need to be bleeding edge fast. Descent video, it isn't a game computer... though that would be nice.

Currently I have:
1 ATI Radeon 8500 dual head AGP video card that I do NOT want to move over... that thing has been a pain in the arse from day 1!
1 cheap Radeon pci video card
2 ATA 100 hard drives, one of those can be ditched
1 Liteon CD Burner
1 Memorex Lightscribe dvd burner
1 Hauppauge tv tuner card (which I want to replace).
and somewhere around here I have an unused ata100 pci card if we need it.
several linux supported usb devices.

This system used to be my personal computer, but I had to close my business store front last year. I moved the equipment to my home and we work from there now. The reason for the multiple monitors is that the equipment software runs on Windows (shudder) and I attach to those boxes with vnc. So normally I have 2-3 vnc sessions, a browser and various other apps running most of the time.... and sometimes the tv. :D

I'm pretty sure that the nvidia-drivers-180.x will work just fine for it.

Blessed be!

I'd go with an AMD 780G based board:

or 790GX:

Those are real nice energy savers and they're pretty fast. Both can decode HD video with the slowest single core sempron available and take a lot less power then the chipset on the Atom boards.
